What would happen to all of our games we bought on Steam if Steam went bankrupt and went out of business?

VALVe said years ago that they would release a patch to allow them all to work without authentication. I doubt you'd be able to play multiplayer games that require Steam to be online, though.

this was discussed in an old TGN podcast episode where I talked about my distaste for digital download services. What ED said is correct however, a patch.

steam is a great option but i dont want to see all games only on DL and no game stores or boxes,still prefer my ole school hard copies

If Valve Steam goes bankrupt EA or another company will buy them out. It would be stupid for them not to buy a perfect digital distribution system such as steam.

But seriously, they got in on the ground floor. They made digital distribution work, and it works quite well. Their games sell in massive quantities.

They made a pretty big gamble with tying Half-Life 2 to Steam, but it paid off. I suppose the fact that Steam itself is free could be one big reason why HL2 didn't end up like Shadowrun and Halo 2. Tying those to an untested operating system that cost people big money didn't work out so well for Microsoft.
