VALVe said years ago that they would release a patch to allow them all to work without authentication. I doubt you'd be able to play multiplayer games that require Steam to be online, though. -

If Valve Steam goes bankrupt EA or another company will buy them out. It would be stupid for them not to buy a perfect digital distribution system such as steam.Comment

I can't imagine the turn of events that would lead up to the demise of Steam...

But seriously, they got in on the ground floor. They made digital distribution work, and it works quite well. Their games sell in massive quantities.
They made a pretty big gamble with tying Half-Life 2 to Steam, but it paid off. I suppose the fact that Steam itself is free could be one big reason why HL2 didn't end up like Shadowrun and Halo 2. Tying those to an untested operating system that cost people big money didn't work out so well for Microsoft.Comment
