I'm not talking about fast pace but 5 minutes to understand and get into a game.

The realism card is complete and utter bullsh!t. If you think otherwise, you're deceiving yourself. Nothing about the gameplay of any FPS is actually like reality. Sorry, it's fantasy and fiction, not reality.

I didn't have trouble learning to play the CoD or BF series or TF2. All of them are based upon an extremely simple concept: shoot guys on the other team to win. Sure there are various, minute differences that make one game more complicated than another, but ultimately, they were all very easy to learn how to play. Play an RTS game, if you want something that is difficult to learn to play.

The MMORPG genre wouldn't exist if people were discouraged by complexity.

Totally agree with the point about BF/CoD. There's nothing that compares to the Battlefield epicness with 64 players and vehicles, and CoD is great in infantry combat and a lot faster to get into the action due to the fast pace and small maps.

Not that any games truly emulate reality, but there are definitely different degrees of realism in games. AA and PR are a lot different from CoD and TF2.

I think he ment authenticity, not full blown realism.

A tree is a lot taller than a blade of grass, but both are so much smaller than Mt. Everest that it doesn't matter when you're comparing the three.

Semantics. My point remains even if you substitute "authenticity" for "realism."

But you don't care about Mt. Everest if you're an ant that's interested in the grass and the tree. He's right here, of course games are miles from realism away but the gameplay changes a lot and therefore it DOES matter.

Weve had fast paced online games for decades Unreal Tournament+Quake to name a few, its nothing new
UT and Quake were different games and their online following was never nowhere near what CoD and BF have.

And nowadays they are a dying breed, militaristic shooters are the way to go, but when UT and Quake were in their "prime" they were very popular for that exact reason... fast to get into, instant action.

Dont use Quake 4 and UT3 as an example of fast paced-skill based shooters to be dying out. UT3 was a tech demo and Quake 4 was just godawful. ET:QW had its own severe issues which ultimately lead to its demise.

COD is popular because its executed well and BF is popular for the same reason. If militaristic shooters would be the way to go, then surely FFOW would be one of the most played games ever?

Also, its the slower pace which makes it more popular because its less demanding. There are almost no whiners in UT2k4, Q3 or QL games whereas BF and COD franchise are full of them.

I have more people on my list who used to play militaristic shooters and who have now gone to WoW than those who still play old, fast games.

COD4 is not a "5 minutes and you know the game" kind of an undertaking. It takes approximately 50 hours for someone who has no experience with COD franchise, to start getting an average ~1:1 KDR in pubs. The game is ridiculously difficult for an average gamer to be good at. In BF, in 50 hours you can rack up plenty of kills if you know how to abuse the engine, not to mention you can pick the fights whereas in COD, the condensed action will force you to engage better players many a times during a round, furthermore setting the challenge bar to a new level.

In 300 hours, BF2 "legends" are born
In 300 hours youre still a punching bag in COD4
