fine, then how about just separating head from the rest of the body in determining whether you're revivable or not?
Like I said, headshots and explosions shouldn't be reviveable, anything else should. This way it gives a bit more sense of realism while still keeping the game fun. :)

what if the tank only ran over your little toe? :p
as far as explosions go, i don't they all should be unrevivable. it would make nade spamming too powerful. it should be judged by the distance from explosion. if you're hit with splash, you should be revivable. i mean just because you get a tiny bit of shrapnel stuck in your buttocks it shouldn't make you unrevivable.

The thing is if your killed by a grenade its not going to be a tiny bit of shrapnel in the buttocks that kill you, more like a chunk to the head or neck or something. It would cause more damage than a single bullet anyway. The thing is we could discuss all the different ways people could be killed and whether they should be reviveable or not but all we are doing is overcomplicating things.
It needs to be kept simple as your average gamer isn't going to care where the grenade hits you, just that it has hit and killed you. I do think Battlefield might be better with more specific damage but I don't think the average Battlefield player wants the game as hardcore as that and I think it would put some players off if it did become more realistic.
I don't think it should be made un-reviveable form all explosions thou.
Then number of nades that get spammed annoys me to start with in BF2 when one blows me up , if new DICE games have as many nade spamed and i can't get revived from it i might just smash my monitor up

 I haven't really notice any nade spamming in BC1 and 1943 to be honest. Destructive environments stop the problem of nade spamming in choke points like in BF2 as you can just make your own route through a wall or building with a grenade launcher rather than taking a set route all the time where people constantly chuck grenades. So I think your monitor would be safe as you wouldn't be getting blown up by grenades all the time
Just putting this out here, I haven't given it a lot of thought (I've just read this thread 2 minutes ago).
First and foremost, I want to make it very clear that if I were to design a game, realism would be less important than good gameplay ANYTIME. I don't care if it looks stupid being hit by a jet wing and then being revived, if that is good for gameplay it should be possible. In any case, the only way shock paddles would even heal anyone is if they suffered cardiac arrest. Being riddled by 10 SMG bullets to the chest is equally devastating as one sniper bullet to the head in terms of survivability, so if you take realism as a starting point, you're on a slippery slope.
Essentially, what you want to do is make it so that reviving someone gives you back an asset on the field quicker than waiting for respawn does, yet it shouldn't be so powerful that it's no problem if you die.
Here's my suggestion: EVERYTHING is reviveable (screw "realism") except headshots. Headshots take a conscious effort by the attacker, and this should be rewarded. When killed, a player chooses to be reviveable or not (Default: no. Click to activate). When revived, a player only has 50% health or something; a handicap to make sure players have an incentive to not die.
You can get revived once, if you die within 10 seconds of your revive, additional respawn time is added.

Theoretically, what this would do is encourage people to play well. People would die, but it wouldn't always be a 100% best choice to revive them immediately.
Eliminates statpadding (only one revive per corpse possible).
Firepower remains the same for revived teammates, they're just not at full health until a medic can get them patched up completely (most likely after the fight).
Well in the beta you get shot and you can be revived, I have been hit by some explosions before and I don't think I was revivable, as in having a tank shell lodged up my ***.
I am not 100% sure on this. I know it annoys some people but really you can have some funny and hilarious moments, watching a friend get ragdolled into orbit by an explosion and then rushing out to revive him, might seem silly sometimes but imo it doesn't break the game in any great measure.
I think the respawn time addition could be good though, it can sometimes be short in the beta anyway but the balance seems to work.
One thing I like is you don't really get to watch your dead body as you do in BF2, you get sent straight to the kit select screen, if you are revived you are literally torn away from it in a white flash of light and are right back in the middle of the battle. Not sure if it was intended but imo it has a nice effect.
In BF2 if you kill a guy, and keep shooting his body with the APC, you'll see Xs until he actually dies (this takes less than 15 seconds to do) so that he can't be revived.
They should just make a system like that, but make it apply to ALL weapons, not just a few (APC, tank rocket, AA). So if you can manage to shoot the dead body a few more times, he can't be revived anymore.
