it might not be locking up, you might just need to wait a long time for the next step in the process to kick in. at least that's the case with my bf2 complete. it installs, then it waits a while then activates to the next step, then next, then so on.

next time, just wait patiently instead of thinking your pc is locked up. let it finish on its own.

However, the key either needs to be entered manually (in regedit) with a x9392 prefix or you must use the utilities to enter and hash it after restoring from backup; the hashed version of the key is tied to a specific Windows UID value so you can't just copy it to a different copy of Windows.
I can't remember for sure, but I think I attempted this before the patch that encrypted the serial number. I remember searching through the registry for anything else that might be related to BF2, and I did find a couple things, but it still didn't work. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

On a side note, it did work with BF1942. The only problem was that the mod toolkit didn't recognize the install; obviously I missed something there too.

I've never had problems with installs. XP 32 and Vista 32. But somtimes it took a LONGG time. Sometimes it didn't. I think you may not be waiting long enough. And when you double click on the patch setup, just wait a while.

You can use Total Uninstaller to monitor all changes the installer made to the system. But I have to agree with the encrypted CD key part.

Never had a problem installing BF2 either,

But since 1.5 is probably the last patch and it's 1.5gigs, I'd love to have a single file of BF2 installer patched with 1.5.

Just double click, enter cd-key, install.

It would be much cleaner than having a BF2 image/cd, 1.4 patch, 1.5 patch.
