Your gonna love this, one fix for installing the patch is to install SF, lol.

EDIT: Pain in the...to install BF2 on Vista and Windows 7!

I do have SF, but haven't played it much at all for some reason, but yeah definitely a pain haha.

The only problem now is I randomly CTD after about 5-10 minutes of playing. =(

I couldn't uninstall the game so I reinstalled it by going into the CD and right clicking the setup.exe and "run as admin", originally as a solution to try and install patch (still can't uninstall the game). Seems to help, none yet.

EDIT: Go to the /EA Games/Battlefield 2/ find BF2.exe>>right-click, properties>>Compatibility Tab>>Check box next to 'run as administrator'. Done.

Well I was aware of this from previous experiences, and thats been done. (The whole O/S privledges thing) but now it just without warning, CTDs during gameplay.
