Try reinstalling punkbuster and running the pbsvc service installer.
Should be located in your system32 folder.

Yeah punk buster turned out to be the problem. I tried to update it last night but all this stupid security stuff on Vista kept blocking PB so I couldn't get it to update. Just turned it all off and updated punkbuster, now everything works perfectly.

Thanks to everyone who helped it took me close to 10 hours of frustration but I finally got Bf2 to run, a week after I bought it.
