don't make the same K/P mistakes this time.

IF you guys don't want to deal with knife and pistol mess this time around, please make sure you don't associate any awards with knife and pistol this time.

also if you're gonna have awards please don't make lame ones like making people waste 50 hours in AA to be eligible or having a certain W/L ratio (because winning/losing is usually outside the control of 1 player).

Who cares if some idiots are wasting their lives not playing properly and not getting the full enjoyment out of the game. Its not like its spoiling your fun.

look i'm not having the same conversation again whether it matters or not. obviously it does to some degree for EA to wipe them off leaderboards back then and make an announcement that they have shut down k/p servers. my point is basically if they don't want to go through this crap again, might as well not make any awards related to k/p.

don't come in the thread to crap on it saying it's not an issue. maybe you guys weren't around for 2142 when this was a daily topic on these boards.

for the last time, this conversation is not about whether it matters, some care, some not obviously and i realize it. it's about the fact that there is a small solution to avoid the whole mess altogether.

I don't see it as an issue. If they want to have fun on a k/p server (which are fun, not just for statspadding), then let them.

It hardly affects your own gameplay experience...

again, the discussion is not about whether it's an issue for certain people or not, it's about avoiding a potential problem. and it does affect others believe it or not. timsad had his legit knife stats wiped because they thought he did it at k/p servers.

in that case EA are idiots and they should check suspected players, not just say "ZOMFG he must be a knife server user cos he has amazing score!111!!!!1.... BAN!!11!"

Then EA should not wipe anyones stats if they go on KP servers or not. People should be able to get achievements like that how they want. If it means that much to them they can go and pad them for all I care.

Thats becuase Valve realise that most of their players are more concerned about just having fun and working as a team than whoring achievements. Infact you should in BF3 just unlock weapons after you've been playing for so long so people dont feel the need to pad, and awards can just be fun extras on the side.

For me this always comes down to the fact that:

They bougbht the game and are entitled to play the game how they want, if people want to play k/p servers then so be it, they know the "risks" and its their choice.

I really dont see how it can affect someone elses game if you are not playing on their server other than the leaderboards, but honestly if you follow them that religiously that you get upset about k/p servers then maybe its time to take a break.

I remember times in BF2 and CSS where the whole team would end up playing with knives and for me it didnt destroy the fun.

All this really comes down to is EA needs to be in better control of the ranked servers. Unranked servers are fair game for anything, k/p included, but people didn't play unranked k/p because it didn't boost their stats. If EA had been more vigilant about keeping the servers legit, then they wouldn't have even had to bother wiping individual players. If a server is allowed to keep its ranked status, it should have to follow better guidelines and not allow things like d|A allowed, or w8liftn, or skunk2142, or k/p, timepad, etc. If they shut down the offending servers then padding no longer becomes an issue because that leaves people without a place to pad (most people can't do any serious padding on a regular pub server, although I've seen people try). It's hilarious, although in a sad way, that you can type in the word 'PAD' to BF2's server browser and get plenty of hits on servers that blatantly state their padding servers, but someone legit like timsad or moose get statwiped while playing 100% legit on servers that obey the RoE. More than a little backwards, I'd say.

Whilst K/P servers did undermine the value of the stats system, IMO back in 2005 there wasn't as much value placed on stats. If you look at the gaming scene now with the consoles having Achievements and Trophies supported within the OS and much more people whoring these things it's a different issue. So if BF3 makes it on to the consoles there will need to be some limiting and careful scrutiny.

If it stays PC only, I'd leave it as it was to be honest. It wasn't that destructive if people really want to spend all that time for a .jpeg then let them.

if they just get rid of having leaderboards and decay ranks, then it's not a problem. they can keep persistent stat tracking and awards but once they get into ranking people, then people go out of their way to blatantly cheat. and contrary to popular belief, the padders do affect gameplay of other people, for example, a padder with more pts and higher rank can often get first dibs commanding. a padder can also steal the gold/silver/bronze from you. i guess if you don't care about achievements, the latter doesn't matter but you see my point.

the more i think about it, getting rid of the leaderboards and decay ranks will solve problems like this. ask this question: would all those cheaters that populate the leaderboard cheat if there was no leaderboard and decay ranks at all to recognize them? the only reason we know they exist is because of the leaderboard and decay ranks, right? let stat tracking be for yourself and maybe to compare with friends, but don't go making global rankings and award stupid sh*t like supreme commander which was often another way to say supreme padder.
