If BF3 really is the true next gen Battlefield game with destruction, massive battles (and possibly Mirrors Edge inspired movement) then I'd say there's a good chance that the game would be PC only...

When consoles start to get old, they start to lag behind the PC. An example of this are games like HL2, Doom 3 and BF2, they are all considered PC classics and would at the time of release not have been portable to consoles because the damn thing wouldn't run them!

It's when the PC is really starting to pull ahead of the consoles that the really innovative and brand new games come out that blow our minds. Crysis was a little early, but it shows what potential computers have now and the years to come. There won't be a new Playstation or Xbox for some time and that gives the developers time to try new concepts and ideas that wouldn't work on consoles. Guess why Modern Warfare 2 uses the same engine as CoD4, except for the addition of texture streaming?

I'd say the next couple of years are going to be brilliant for a PC gamer. We can already see this far that many PC versions of multi platform games have better graphics and in some cases even extra features. For an example, check out Batman: Arkham Asylum, the PC version has both PhysX support and much sharper and detailed graphics (not to mention modding).

Whoever thinks PC gaming is dead is an idiot. Never was and never will be! :yay:

Yeah, it just goes in cycles with consoles. PC gaming time will come in ~2011 again and vanish for 4 years when the next consoles come.

Yea, usually when a new console is released PC gaming slows down a little bit for couple of years but at the end of a console's life cycle PC gaming comes back with vengeance.

BF3 should be PC exclusive with no console ropes holding it back and it should absolutely max out everything.

It will most likely be exclusive, unless DICE is waiting for the next generation of consoles, but IMO that is not going to happen because the usual 5-6 year cycle has changed for 360 and PS3 and both Sony and MS will look forward to getting more life out of those systems by adding small things like NATAL and other crap.... the graphics are already "good enough" for general audience.

the thing with BF3 having mirror's edge type movement is that it's not realistic for a soldier carrying heavy equipment to be jumping around and climbing pipes etc. mirror's edge character was a lightweight girl with no equipment. soldier will have major encumbrance.

I don't think they meant running and jumping, I think they meant general movement, look and interaction with the environment.

Re: Battlefield 3 and what it could mean for PC gaming as a whole

If BF3 is a true successor to BF2 and really delivers, I think it could revive PC gaming and maybe bring more developers to PC again. There aren't really games out there that deliver diverse game play like the Battlefield franchise. I honestly think we have only scratched the surface. To me DICE is leading the way on this Tug-of-War kind of game play. The good thing is that improvement can be made even years down the road. Some game are made where major upgrades or improves made to a game can hurt the actual game. With BF games, the diversity, endless vehicles, crazy gameplay, Tug-of-War, Rock paper scizzors, the improvements are endless.

Hopefully DICE really delivers and bring new things to the table.

BF3 should definantely be pc exclusive. I think consoles got their fair share with bad company.

They should follow in the tracks of BF1942, BF2 etc...Those are for me and will always be the true BF games.

The last shooter I enjoyed was STALKER. No surprise it was a PC exclusive... There's just a certain something about games that aren't dumbed down for ADD afflicted kiddies and those "Casual Gamers" the market loves so much. I get "Casual Gaming", I really do, I just wish the market wouldn't neglect those who want a bit more breadth and depth.

it'll be interesting if they include prone.

i hope there would be a reaction similar to IW and no dedicated servers if they leave out prone.

I like the concept of stalker, but the game can be so frustrating I've started it like 4 times since I got it pretty much at release and not got that far at all, which is straight up annoying considering how much content there is in that game, but I do agree you can feel the difference in a game that has had no compromises made to fit in with other platforms.

I think it would be, perhaps not to the same extreme but the PC community seems to be constantly on the edge of raging over most things after we got shafted by MW2.
