    Re: Arma 2

The movements are slow and clunky in Arma 2 because of two reasons.

    1. Low performance.
    2. That is how you would move in real life loaded with combat gear.

The stance change is actually quite fast. You also wouldn't want to drop too quickly lest ye be crushed by your backpack...

Evolution is one bad mission. It encompasses BF2's 'freedom' and almost requires the player to swap between armour, air vehicles etc. Try finding servers hosting more specific and realistic missions. Most of the time, its played with only five players, making it even more unrealistic.

For real? I must be lagging then. I'll check it out more when I get home, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

On the other hand I've only played the demo, maybe the full game is better! I really want to like this game. Maybe I just have to get used to it... I mean I'm so used to the easy movements of BF2, you're right, with all that gear etc. you shouldn't be able to move too easy.

What about the blurryness and unfocus everywere? Is it my resolution or is it a effect? It's very annoying! But realistic, I have never been in the army or anything like it so I wouldn't know but I've played some paintball and it sure is hard to keep focus on something when there's people shooting at you. I can only imagine how it is when it's deadly shot's fired at you.

Uh, the blur is due to post processing. In the advanced graphics options, turn off post processing completely, it will remove unnecessary bloom and blur. :)

The movements in BF2 may well be described as a floating camera. There is no real feeling of inertia, you can simply sprint all over the place with ease.

Low performance may slow down the time of your keys, meaning that the action will take place only a great deal after you press the key.

But some of the clunky feeling is simply due to the realistic movement. Don't forget, that the game takes your body's movement into account. If you look down, you can see your arms and legs moving too. Its not just a floating camera.

Whilst there may be a delay in your controls registering, you can't expect to be strafing left one moment, and then instantly strafing right. It will model the inertia in between, meaning that you pause for a second and then start moving right.

If the head bob is getting to you, you can decrease it in the game options too.

Ok, that's great! Yeah, I think my graphic settings are a little to high.

So is this game best played in coop? How do you guys play? I'm a little confused.

I'm sorry for all the questions but money is short and I want to buy the best game for me.

I personally believe its best played in co-op. PvP has the potential to be great, but you really need to join a clan for that sort of thing. Coop by default requires the mission maker to stray away from a deathmatch setting. PvP missions tend to be deathmatch, which is not where this game shines.

Also remember that the head bobbing can be reduced (under game options, not graphics). Unless you fell motion sickness adds to the realism

The problem with this game (IMHO) is that they have provided us with an excellent sandbox, but very little content and help. So you are very often left without a clue as to what you are supposed to do.
That goes for online too, you best bet is to find a core group that seems to know what they are doing, regardless of game mode.
Before ARMA 2 I usually only played PvP in online FPS, but the coop is actually pretty good too in this game.

But if this is going to be your only game purchase for a while, then I would recommended that you make sure that you really like the demo.

I am starting to understand evolution, but in most other gametypes people just seem to be scattered randomly all over the map.
The first thing about gamemodes is that in all honesty you can create anything you want. It takes a lot of understanding, research etc but if you get good at it, many people spend more time creating missions

                Typical game modes

Co-Op: These are usually objective based missions against AI, i.e go here, kill that, travel there destroy this, travel there and clear that town. They range in size from like 5 players to around 50. Most popular larger missions are Domination & Evolution.

Capture the Island: Basically two sides fight against eachother in a RTS kind mode. You build units, go off and fight.

                Warefare: Kind of like CTI.

Search and Destroy: This is one that ive had some input in developing. We call it S&D as thats the closest things i can think of to it. This is the mode the Charlie Foxtrot tournament uses and we designed it specifically for it. As a result im a little biased :p Basically you have a chain of 5 Zulus which are large 1km x 1km boxes which cover large swaths of terrain. Two are held by each side at the start and one is neutral. You get team points for killing the enemy in the neutral zone and team points for physically occupying the zone. Once one side gets 500 points through a combination of kills & occupation, they 'capture' the Zulu and the neutral zone switches to an enemy one. We are the only server running these. We often have around 70-80 in the evenings UK time.

Capture the flag: self explanatory, chase each other round and get their flag, bring it back to your base.

Assault and Secure: These are proving pretty popular at the minute for the Player vs Player sector at the minute. Objectives are in a chain abled A-H or whatever the las objective is called. You go there try and kill the enemy and capture the zone.

Berzerk: This was a set of missions made for ArmA. Someone said they would be transferred of ArmA II but either the author hasnt yet or isnt going to. Someone will make them eventually. These missions are most like BF2. A number of areas you occupy simultaneously to get points then win the game.

I am sure there are loads more but i cant think at the minute.

no sadly, not as yet. Hopefully i wont get your hopes up but there is a 'greyed out' friends tab. Usually the ArmA community are all over stuff like that but i havent read anything about. Perhaps they didnt have time to implement it and maybe it will be in the future. Like I said though, ive read nothing about it so dont bank on it.

I left my computer on over night. I couldn't find the game at my local retailers so Steam was my only option right now.

I will have to retract my statement made earlier about the voice acting. Some of it is bad but alot of is not, now that I am playing the retail game. So far I am having fun with it. Sometimes the enemy AI does suck though. It takes your eyes a few seconds to adjust when yo put on the night vision goggles and also when you take them off.

Also a question for those that know about the mission editing. Could I make a mission with opposing snipers and the object of the mission is to see which sniper can take out the target first?
