But many aren't capable of that, at least to a high degree of effectiveness. It's much easier, even with experience, to fire a single shot gun accurately than it is to fire an automatic in single shot just as accurately.

My point is, if you want that accuracy for single shot, you should be directed towards a single shot, which in turn decreases your effectiveness at close range - and just the opposite for automatics. Sure, you can fire a single pretty fast, or an automatic single shot, but they aren't designed for that and therefore require the players to develop their skill to be good both close and long range with a weapon.

I don't think that balance will be harmed at all to be honest.

What is the problem with an automatic G3? It has a low rate of fire, and a lot of recoil.

There is a point where balance just needs to be thrown to the wind. Look at what Treyarch did to the MGs in multiplayer. They made the 1919 and the MG42 have 50 bullet drums/belts, making them useless for their proper use as machineguns.

Things such as spawns and map layout must be balanced, so that in the end it does come down to player skill, but neglecting the selector for 'balance' is not necessary.

What is the next step for balance? I know. Everyone gets an M16 and an M9. No other weapons.

Or, "What is the problem with a selective-fire AK?"

That would have an even less effect on game balance than making the G3/M14 capable of being automatic.

While I'm not sure what variant it is, I don't think the M14 is the EBR, so I think it is stuck on semi.

As you said, there would be nothing wrong with a selective fire AK.

Are we going to start yelling insults at each other, such as "You single shot noob!"

There's no need to add a single shot mode to automatics, because they are already capable of that if the player is skilled. The main concern is adding automatic (or in the case of the m16 semi-auto) to semi-automatic guns. The semi -auto guns are more powerful, and their single shot limit is added to balance power with speed.

Removing this balance that limits the effectiveness/speed of the semi-automatic gun will only hurt gameplay. And about your point to "throw balance to the wind" that only hurts your comments' merit, as games should revolve around balance, not on excessive features.

Re: This game needs a selector switch.

But the G3 balances itself out...high amount of recoil and slow fire rate for more power.

About my comment to throw balance to the wind. It is easy to exaggerate that point, but I don't mean it in this way:

America should have access to air support and a full arsenal of weapons...and the Russians, well, they get Makarovs.

No. I mean, that there simply has to be a point where balance does not become a factor, otherwise as I previously stated, we would all be running around with M16s and M9s. Nothing more.

"Oh this balance is BS, his sniper rifle can shoot further than my SMG!"

"Oh what, his shotgun killed me in one shot!"

"Oh what, his LMG is doing more damage than my assault rifle!"

What exactly is that meant to mean?

You do realise that I did state that there must be a point where balance is not a factor? I never stated that it should have no balance.

And what funner than a game of M16s and M9s. Also, since MW2 uses a modern/present day setting, should the guns not be somewhat indicative of their real life qualities? If not, then why don't IW just make a sci-fi game where everything can be balanced without the guise of realism.

what im saying is you seem to be taking this TOO seriously. So what, they thought it was balanced not to put a selector switch. that was IW's decision. There are plenty of other games that have a selector switch, its not absolutely necesary to put one in. its just a small thing. An FPS's list of things to comply to does not include a selector switch AFAIK.

I wouldn't say that I'm taking it too seriously. I just don't like people saying that something like this will get rid of balance. I don't mind if it is left out, although I would like to have selective fire.

From what we've seen, MW2 will also have a Glock, another weapon which would be nice to have selective fire on.

Re: This game needs a selector switch.

                          Here's the point:

If you want semi-automatic capabilities for an automatic, that won't remove balance, but it will remove the skill that was previously required to use that weapon effectively at long range.

If you want automatic capabilities for a currently semi-automatic gun, then that will remove balance. Why? Because the gun is semi to balance out its power, so if it were automatic then it would be excessively powerful and therefore unbalanced.

Either way, there's no need for a selector switch - whether it be to maintain the current skill level that is required (if there even is any left for public games, to be honest) or to maintain balance, there just isn't a reason to implement it.

                            Much simpler this way.

Cool, I find it really interesting that the votes are tied up. I know people from the COD4 series have been used to the whole lack of a selector switch, but once you have the choice, try it out and get use to it, there is no going back. A prime example of where I would love the ability would be a "tactical" Search and Destroy game. I did read the counter arguments and I do agree with them to a point, in fact those are the arguments I had to use to convince some of my friends to play this game since they didn't like nor understood the lack for one (though I think honestly this had more to do with older COD games).

I think the next interesting topic multiple attachments to the guns (red dot, silencer and nade). I was thinking of something like a point system for a max load out, like say you start out with 100 points and give each item/perk a value. I think I'll start that in another thread.

P.S. The one lines along the "if you can't tap the trigger you suck" or "just 'cause" (that's really all I could make out of them) really didn't need to be. This is a discussion section, not a "I have a better idea then you, just 'cause!" section, but rather a "I have a better idea then you, because..." section.

Try doing a search or two...I know it's been discussed before, either in a properly-named thread, or going off on a tangent in a different topic.

IMO, it would make some guns very, very powerful...the only way I think it could work is if it cost you a valuable perk, say a level 2 perk...you could have an uber gun, but no Stopping Power, or Juggernaut, or UAV Jammer, etc.
