That's not versatility.

1. capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another of various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc.: a versatile writer.
2. having or capable of many uses: a versatile tool.

By having a switch, a weapon becomes more versatile - it can be used in more situations (single shot, or burst, or auto).
So, on the one hand, this would cause some people to not switch between different weapons as much...instead using a single fav weapon for more situations/jobs.
On the other hand, it could encourage people to use other weapons more, that they didn't like because of the firing characteristics (eg. M16 or G3).

This is a classic example of the pros and cons of design decisions, and why game makers often struggle to make a choice in what features their games will have. There's no "right" answer...either way will have certain consequences to gameplay.
