    Re: Total War series

Tons of fun, have played it plenty of times (although I still fail with the Naval battles). I've always loved TW games because they don't require resource management, it boils down to strategy and tactics, which makes for a much more exciting game.

From what I have found with the navel battle, if you charge right in and try to focus fire on 2-3 ships in the nearest line and damage them a lot before the rest get there you have pretty much got it in the bag. As long as you dont let them form a circle of death its all good. Am I the only one who finds the chain shot, or whatever it is for bringing down sails fairly ineffective, taking a good 4-5 broadsides before it takes down their sails, and the grapeshot is even worse!

        Re: Total War series

the chain shot is somewhat ineffective unless you pummel a ship with superior numbers, I prefer to use it after I have damaged a ship with regular shot which seems to make it more effective

as for grape shot, I only use that in boarding actions, its effect over range is limited, when you are boarding a ship give the enemy a grapeshot broadside to totally decimate their numbers so you can take the ship

and IGN have done a review!

        yegods I need this game

just remember in naval battles, keep your ships moving and flowing in the line formation and do not try to micromanage them all

            Re: Total War series

I played it and the effects are really good. I like the overall layout and everything, but I still see some of the same problems that have been in all of them. Like I have soldiers that just stop walking and getting the lines to attack correctly doesnt seem to work well.

Maybe its just me. I will try it a few more times. The naval battles are very nice. They could have made a game entirely based on that.

              Re: Total War series

when forming and attacking in lines I have found it much better to use the buttons in the bottom right

in previous Total war games it had been hard to move a formation in Uniform, this is important in Empire because you want to maintain a line formation that can fire

so all you have to do now is select your line and hold down the move forward button, instead of clicking on the map; it really is a great function when you are squaring up to an enemy line

I am going to a local Tesco tommorow because apparently a lot of their stores have been putting the game on shelves early lol; even if I can't activate the game I can still nab it early

                Re: Total War series

I wish that the AI would re-form their lines if they are moved. For example, I have an infantry line set up awaiting an enemy attack, and I decide to send my cavalry up a bit and to the flank, but they end up passing through the line and shifting soldiers around, who don't then return to their original position

                  Re: Total War series

yeh that has been the case in all Total War games, pushing cavalry through your own lines causes disruption, quick thing would be to simply group your line then reform it, then ungroup afterward

and no joy at Tesco, some of the stores have at least got it right

ah well I shall have it on Tuesday and still probably not be allowed to activate lol

I only have MTW2, play it every so often. It's taking forever to conquer the world as the god damn Mongolians have all all of Russia and Asia.

That was your mistake. First thing I did after conquering most of Europe was shoot over and conquer Asia. The muslims gave me fits at the end, but my barbaric boot prevailed

Oh, and that was MTW1, not 2

Its easy to move your army in formation, just follow the tutorial on medieval 2 that shows you how to use goups, it occasionally does not work when the terrian is unsuitable for that formation
