    Frostbite Engine

I read somewhere that the Frostbite can - efficiently - only handle around 24 players. I assume that's due to the destroyable environments and it got me wondering... Is it an acceptable compromise?

Sure, it's fun to blow stuff up and no doubt it certainly adds to the gameplay but do you think not being able to handle a standard number of players worth it?

Another thing I've wondered... Would the Frostbite be capable of doing something on the scale of karkand or something? After all, there would be a great deal more areas needing rendered if you could blow holes in walls of buildings that would normally not be able to be accessed =o

don't know, but i do remember playing a lot of Red Faction multiplayer back in the days and it had a fair amount of destructible environments through their geo-mod engine. i believe red faction was limited to 16 players, and i do remember on certain maps where players would modify the map beyond recognition and it dropped the fps a lot. despite that, the game was still playable, no noticeable lag, (it was just a fps drop). seeing as how game technology has advanced since then, i don't really believe that frostbite engine can't support more than 24. especially on a dedicated server. if 1943 is not meant to be hosted on dedicated servers, then it makes a bit more sense but still i don't believe destructible terrains is the reason we have the 24 player limit. the limit is there because that's the right # of players for a console game, and 1943 is after all a console game that will be ported over to PC.

Best games Ive ever played on ANY system on ANY game has been on 30 or less. When you get larger you run into all kinds of problems with lag spikes, constant camping, everyone running around like crazy, and never being able to actually accomplish an objective.

I think having a fully destructable environment is worth a few slots on a server. Gameplay changes a lot when that can happen.

        just as i suspected:

from the interview with DICE designer: http://www.totalgamingnetwork.com/ma...d.php?t=186047

...Beside these design decisions there are technical limitations. Microsoft and Sony have a very strict bandwidth limit on consoles and we are networking a lot more then 24 players:
        - 24 players are networked
        - Almost as many physics driven vehicles with movable and destroyable parts
        - All destruction, if a wall is being destroyed on one client we need to update it on all the others, otherwise we could end up with players hiding behind non-existent walls.

If we did remove all destruction and all our vehicles we could have more players. But no other game gives you the wide gaming experience we have!
        doesn't bode well for BC2...

There should be no question about whether or not the game supports 64+ players. People need to understand that you can still play with smaller amounts of players even if the game supports a lot more. They did it in all the BF games. If you limit it to 24 players then you have no choice but to play with 24 players or less. With 64 or more you have the choice to play either with a lot of people, or with very little. With higher limits you can make both groups of people happy. Why wouldn't you want that?

Anyway, Deesies, I thought the same as you when I read that IGN interview. However, on DICE's official website they say this about the Frostbite engine:

The engine carries forward the unrivalled online air/ground/sea vehicle and first-person gaming pedigree from previous Battlefield engines, and adds support for massive networked destruction in a large-scale environment.
But can we trust DICE about this information? After all, they think 64 player slot servers are mostly half full and that BF1942 has 7 weapon classes...

They cleverly word it to make it soiund like they mean large scale battles but if you pick apart their wording, they're really only referring to the destroyable envirnoments online.

For one, I wanted to know why it was terrible as Minmaster didnt state why, I made the assumption that it had to do with player slots.

Also, the other Battlefield series did it, on a different engine. Is it the end of the world if one game can only have 24 people but an entirely destructable environment?

I never said I didnt want smaller limits only. The thing is that this is a "mini game" that is very watered down compared to the functions of the other BF series games.

Since I know that this is a mini-game, my expectations for it is not as high as if it was suppose to be BF3. So many are running around about how this is terrible and the end of everything, but the game isnt even near finished nor considered a full fledged game.

EDIT: I just read your other post about this game being the last slot of the 5 BF games. I can then see your concern for this. Unfortunatly, if that was true, there is nothing anyone could do to stop this and it is the end of the BF series. All you could do is not buy the game in protest. Problem is the console kids will buy it in droves.

that is, because constantly updating via network to relay information about destructible terrains would go beyond the network threshold of console systems.

i think on the PC side, that's not really the issue because we have dedicated servers. not sure how consoles work but i'm guessing it's not dedicated servers.

imo, this supposed limitation might be the case for consoles, but why impose the limitation on the PC version?

It may not be the end of the world but DICE have to be kidding if they think our computer hardware can't support 64+ players and their so called destructable environment (it's not even real physics btw. it's all scripted just like the nuke in crysis)

That's the question going through my head right now. How much is this game going to be worth for me?
I'm still hopeful. I loved BF2 and even though 2142 wasn't my cup of tea, it seemed to be an alright game.

The rumors Ive read said $15 to $20. They could be wrong. I can tell you that I wouldnt pay full price for the game the way it is now.

NOOO YOU CANNOT GIVE UP ON BF1943!! It means so much to everyone that you play! Say it aint so!

More than 24 players would probily be rediculous. Use your brain. If you have a cap of 24 players, it suggests the map is made for 24 players. Thus the maps will be smallers. If there was a higher cap of players it would be like 30players on a small karkand map. Or 30 players on a cod4 map.

                              Is this what you want?

This game will be awesome. If you cannot see it then its your loss. However no1 cares if you wont be playing it. Keep dreaming if you think your even remotely important lol.

Just an observation. But the amount of effort you have spent researching the game, and further debating it on a neutral stand point suggests you will buy the game.

Also 3 maps, and a new graphics engine is worth far more than £5.
