Is online gaming better in Europe?

I went on a full 64 slot German server in BF2 the other day and I noticed that everyone's ping was <50. When I play on servers in the US and Canada the pings are usually <150.

Geographically, all of Europe could basically fit inside of Canada so all your servers close together while ours are spread out through all of North America.

I wish I could play with people that have pings no less than 50.

I don't know, I think the US have better ISP's - DSL and other very high speed connections seem to be easier to get over there? Whereas it costs alot more here... although Virgin have there fibre optic cable now and offer 20mb at a good price... however it's not always "20mb" if lots of people use it then it goes down to like 2mb :/

Either way, I'm supposed to ping around 30 to most UK servers but I sometimes flucuate alot, not sure whether it's my router or Virgin... but lately my ping has been hitting 60 then jumping to 250 for a second or two, then relaxing at 60 again before dropping a bit to 30 then up again

I prefer a constant lag rather then a spikey one... :/

I get better ping in european servers than some american ones...i think it's because american companies are greedy and put like 20 servers on one box...

the country of France is like the size of Ohio. so when you have Americans in the east playing on servers in the west you are going to have pings in the 100's.

The size difference is basically the reason why latency is lower in europe at this time as cabling technology is similar in north america as europe at this time except a few countries like france which has fibre optic, most others are using old copper cabling but are starting on the path to creating a new fibre optic system, whereas in the US and canada laying expensive cabling outside of the big cities wont be feasible that will mean that for example someone in boston trying to communicate to san fransisco will be a lot slower than someone inside the city zone

Europe and East Asia are good places to lay down crosscountry cabling as they are heavily populated in a small geographical area, western europe (UK, France, Spain Italy, Germany, Switzerland) is only about the size of texas+new mexico but has 325 million+ population so telecoms companies can lay less wire and reach more people, i can see north america falling behind europe and further behind east asia other than if the government steps in with massive capital funding

I guess maybe the only down sides would be cost, and the language barriers? Sometimes I wonder why some Europeans join our American servers when their servers are much better.

I was going to post about the language barriers, that does get annoying. What do you define as better though, ping wise yes, but I always find in BF2 atleast most US servers are more community servers and are very public driven while more EU ones are clan servers with loads of ****ty house rules.

Actually, the UK and Euro Internet deals nowadays are a lot better than the US. It seems whilst they don't pay a lot over there, they generally get bad connections, most of which suffer from throttling.

I rarely notice lag on european servers for some reason, on the O.C feels like i'm playing on a server in the us.

Yeah by better I meant ping, and lag in general

Yeah I'm not sure about TF2 but I've found that some games high ping doesn't make a huge difference. UT3 are CoD4 are games that I've played where I've noticed this, but BF2 is extremely sensitive
