I'm thinking on getting L4D at the discounted price, but I just want to know if many people are still playing? Also, do the maps get old after a while? Because they seem somewhat linear.

Yes, there are still a lot of people playing. All the maps are awesome, and beating expert is almost impossible.

Its pretty fun, but I dont know what I am doing I kinda enjoy setting off the car alarms.

Many people are playing, and the maps may seem linear but rarely are. The AI is excellent, and the zombie rushes can change in intensity and location.

One note about the number of people playing . For Easy and Normal levels, you should be able to play with just about anyone. It's alot more frustrating playing advanced and expert with strangers, which is why I stay strictly with fellow clan members.

this game is fun as heck and alot of people are still playing it, although i dont find any use for it ever being played on easy mode...
