    Windows 7 & 2142

So, me being a sucker for punishment, I installed Windows 7 pre beta. I am using the build that was pre-viewed without the new 7 glitter running. Stuff like superbar, aerosnap and desktop slideshow etc. I have enabled those with the bluebadge patch.

To me this looks like Vista - or rather what Vista should have looked like if they had done it properly. The fit and finish is better. There are no windows95 icons floating around the interface - everything looks professional.

Only issues encountered. There is no 5.1 audio! 2142 runs just fine. However Punkbuster doesn't recognise the windows kernel and so kicks me out. I'm hoping the beta will address the 5.1 sound issue and if there are enough users PB might update their software.

Are there any servers running without PB? Can I run a server on my PC. Where can I get that SP unlock mod? Has anyone tried the latest Win7 build?

Running the PB exes in comp mode has no effect. I'm guessing that it should be an easy matter for evenbalance to alter their software so hopefully when the public beta hits this should be sorted.

I had another issue. For some reason the pre-beta will suddenly fail to recognise your soundcard. It's happened to me three times now. Everything's is running nicely then you boot up to find the sound has died. Control panel displays an unknown device where my Xfi should be. Re-installing the driver does nothing . I think it's something to do with IRQ allocations but could not be assed messing about.

I have temporariliy reinstalled Vista X64 to get a few rounds in over Xmas. I will report back my findings when the public beta is made available. Should be early January.

of course, we're also working on new capabilities, so people will be able to do things with windows 7 that were difficult (or perhaps impossible) to do with pcs before. Finally, we're working hard to ensure that windows 7 will run on any pc and work with any program that works today with windows vista, so upgrading from windows vista will be easy.

Upgrading from Vista should be easy considering it is Vista.

I'm surprised that depsite the fact they have changed little - some things still don't work. Minor things so far like PB looking at the kernel no's and installation programs not recognising Win 7. 5.1 sound is broken.

It is a decent OS though so once these little niggles are sorted out it should be good. Benchmarks of the pre-beta suggest it is faster than XP sp3 but I'll take those with a pinch of salt.

Anyone installed 2142 on a clean install of Windows 7 x64 (EALink version)?

For me the BF2CdKeyCheck.exe hangs and causes install to fail. I've tried a couple of the compatibility modes but no luck.

                      Re: Windows 7 & 2142

Well I just got my copy and installed on Windows Seven b.7000 with no problems.

It's academic however as Punkbuster does not support Seven. I just read on their forum the usual lazy bollocks "Evenbalance do not support unreleased, beta or release candidate operating systems. We don't support Windows 7 and won't until it is released to consumers as we are lazy *** biatches who can't be fekked to change a few lines of code. Have a nice day."

I hope some geektypes solve this issue before the release of patch 1.51

Windows 7 its a "PRE-BETA" you said it, don't start saying its bad because its not even ready for testing.

I just tried it another way around. I installed 2142 on a Vista 64 and upgraded that installation to Seven 64. Still not running (EALink version) "BF2142Pace.exe has stopped working" & black screen.

                            1. I didn't say Windows Seven is bad. I like it. It is just a polished Vista but I liked Vista too.

                            2. It is not a pre-beta anymore. It is now a public beta. Microsoft released 2.5 million beta keys and have realised that's not going to be enough so it's not like only a few ultranerds are bothering with testing.

                            3. The only deal breaker I have with Windows Seven at the moment is Punkbuster not recognising the kernel. Now surely a slight modification to the PB software would fix that.

                            4. The whole ethos with Windows Seven is that there are no compatability issues upon release. Such issues irrevocably damaged Vista when it was released. Therefore software/hardware vendors are encouraged to release for the beta.

I just had a look at that - it seems to be some anti-copy bolls included by EA. 2142 itself works but as I say, you won't be able to play yet anyway. If the PB issue is resolved I'll post again in here.

Guys, make sure you have the latest GeForce or Radeon Windows 7 beta drivers. Fixed problems for me :)
