I am actually editing my config. You could say I am hacking. You can change the number of corpses you see in MP on the ground - do you see bullet holes.

All of these things give me an advantage - but am I hacking the game? Is this cheating?

That's not similar to what Patton did. Those are legitimate console commands that you are allowed to use ingame, so no. While I'm not whining over what Patton did, what he did was "wrong" in the technical sense, what you did wasn't.

This is the age old problem. Community approved tweaks and mods aren't hacks. But if for whatever reason even if the tweaks have no real impact on the game it's a hack. Unlocking of perks and guns doesn't particularly change play even on the pub servers but this guy gets roasted for it. He's not aim botting, he's not stripping the textures out, he's not enabling clipping or anything that unlevels play. He's just taking a box lunch of kit and turning it into a smorgasbord. So what?

On the flip side, take the league approved pro mods that make the game very different than the out of the box experience for all involved. These are totally OK even though the only real purpose it to homogenize the game for players who might otherwise spend little time in the game. Can't have the competition squads actually work for their weapons and perks, can we. That's not a hack, it's a comp mod. It's hypocritical and the great part is that nobody in the community really cares so long as they are standing with the mob pointing and shouting, "hack!"

Hopefully it's just you because I can't imagine that there are that many people out there that can't tell the difference between a sanctioned promotional event and someone modifying game files that were never intended to be modified in the first place, so that they could gain an advantage. If Activision had wanted us to have access to all the weapons unlocks from day one we would all have them.

I know you seem to think it's unfair that people like myself were able to spend the extra money to have these unlocks, however as if it needs to be pointed out yet again the difference between what you did and the folks that preordered from Game Stop or purchased the collector’s edition, is that we did not break the rules to get them.

It drives me crazy when people try to twist things around to justify their own unethical behavior. If you have a problem with the special promotions because you think they are unfair, then I suggest you take that up with Activision because despite how you feel about it nothing you say can justify your actions. I am not going to debate semantics with you on this, the bottom-line as far as I am concerned is that you cheated. It doesn’t matter if it fits your definition of a hack or not it’s still cheating.

So paying for sanctioned advantages that you pay for and tweaking every element of the game to give you that higher frame rate is fair, while not paying for the extra unlocks isn't...hmmm. Mighty high morals that we have there friend. I'm judging you :p

I bought the deluxe edition, and feel like I got shafted, because I expected that day-1 advantage. I was able to get a pre-order code that doesn't seem to unlock the M1A1 for me, so all I got was the FG42 which lasted me about as long as took me to get the BAR and then the M1. But still I bought it for the advantage that I thought it would give me and I got screwed royally.

I have to dig further into my OS now to retrieve game info to share it between my notebook and my desktop. If you have the UAC on while you installed COD4, you'll have noticed that the game in stats are hidden even more, in a virtual programs directory thats twice hidden. This company is being beyond lazy when it comes to your stats, any other company puts them nicely in your My Documents or even the nice Game Saves directory that Vista gives you now.

Don't forget in the new Battlefield Heroes game your going to be able to pay for ranks and unlocks, while the game itself is free. I think this whole rank unlock system is getting out of hand. You do under stand that some of these companies, *cough* EA *cough*, are planning on making their FPS pay to play and free with rank restrictions. You can play the new EA games online, but if you wanna rank up and unlock cool stuff that will give you an advantage you'll need to pay, so they can give you more patches, support the game longer and a better all around gaming experience (in theory, maybe not in practice). The community is going to fight this tooth and nail though.

I am not sure how doing that would give you an advantage but I agree with Zuke on this, if what he is stating is correct and those are indeed console commands, then you did nothing wrong....:salute:

Console commands for your config are not illegal and are not the same as what Patton did.

First, you can edit your config through your console in game. Can you in game instantly be at the highest rank with all the weapons? Editing your config for performance is the same as changing your diff gfx settings. I wish they promoted the few changes you could make to get better performance as they're quite easy, but they can be found anywhere on the net, the simple ones that help.

What about binds? Binds that say "My name is JoMaMaz" "My name is JoMaMaz" etc etc are annoying, but fine. When there are binds that give the extra advantage i.e. in MoHAA where people bound their lean keys to their movement keys where they were at least leaning one way when moving is not right. However, I would shoot them with my sniper rifle in their balls and had no probs.

I know you may have felt 'shafted' about your day 1 advantage, but tell me this, is it right then to steal other weapons b/c you didn't get your one? You know the rebate the govt sent out to people? I was supposed to get $600, but b/c of a minor technicality, they disqualified me when I should have gotten it. Does that give me the right then to go steal $6500 from a bank or not pay my taxes this coming year?

Also, nobody forced Patton to make this post. Why do you think he made it? I believe, in his gut, he knew that what he was doing was wrong and it got to him. He didn't want to do being doing something bad, so he made this post in hopes that his actions would be justified and people would say, "Nah, you're fine man." And then he could let his guilt slip away.

IMO, most of it is fine...but the one thing I have a problem with (and this is more IW/Treyarch's fault for allowing it), is that when you turn off enough of those visual options, some objects in the game will disappear and you can see people hiding behind them (eg. bales of hay in Overgrown in COD4).

Turning off decals and bullet holes is one thing, or making textures more crappy to save fps, but actually having large-ish objects disappear/become transparent is just dumb. I know some people using the yitch config know about this, but I'm sure others are just using it because they found the link, and have no idea of that advantage they're getting.

Again, I put this one on IW for allowing it in the engine, and Treyarch for not fixing it/locking it out.

Patton should have said a thing, then peoples high morals wouldn't have come into question. Patton submitting to the pressure and naming people he played with was also low brow on his part. I think if you don't have the balls to finish a fight you shouldn't start one. This brings a lot of aspects of the game and of the individual into question. I'm a firm believe in that anything that you have that gives you an edge, be it more expensive hardware or config tweaks, is an unfair advantage, not the excuse just because you can. That being said and how this has been possible since the good old days of Unreal and Q3A, there is nothing that I can do about it. Hacking to unlock rank and weapons on the other hand, doesn't give them that uber edge, but it does take away from the replayability of the game since the player doesn't have a reason to play those 25-50 hours to unlock everything and can get quickly bored. You see where I'm going here that this crap isn't about unfair advantages, but rather money. Now if the company were to say give you something back, like say STAT SERVERS so I don't have to **** around with my computer or download spyware to bw able to get my stats on another computer or put inplace some kind of system that it won't wipe my stats if I BSOD, like say back ups. Then I would feel worst about hacking stats...maybe.

I've read through this entire discussion twice to see if I've actually missed anything. Apparently I have not. Now that I have done my homework, I have three things to say:

1. Read your license agreement. Precede the following with 'Thou shall not...'

"Hack or modify (or attempt to modify or hack) the Program, or create, develop, modify, distribute or use any software programs, in order to gain (or allow others to gain) advantage of this Program in an on-line multiplayer game settings including but not limited to local area network or any other network play or on the internet."

Take this for what it is worth, but Activision considers the license agreement just that. An agreement.

Personally, I think artificially sweetened game play for personal gain is BS. No matter how it's done.

2. The idea of compromise is BS. Admins that run honest servers for decent people to enjoy without being hassled by douchebags often times do so with their own money. Call it community service. And any and all modified content is done so for the public domain, in the public domain. That means if you log on to one of our servers and we have a mod running, you get to enjoy that mod too, through conventional means.

Bottom line is when a moderator for a popular gaming forum takes a limp-wristed panty-waisted fluff girl position against those who modify gaming profiles, edit content or otherwise manipulate game architecture for personal gain, well that guy just made my job more difficult and that much less enjoyable. So to that guy I say go f*ck your hand. Falls right in line with the old joke: All Nazis will be shot; Nazi sympathizers will be shot twice.

3. Oddly enough, that brings me to my third point. Was I the only one to notice the author of this thread for reasons I do not clearly understand totally ratted out several of his clan mates by name? Nice loyalty meat whistle. You get the 'Have some cheese [rat]' award. Fink. Stoolie. Backstabber.

Special place in hell for cowards and traitors. You can't handle being name called a bit without rolling over on your friends, I'm glad you're not in my foxhole. Screw you twice. Once for rolling over on your friends (regardless of cause or need). Once for modifying your game files for personal gain.

lol. I believe in freedom of speech, so long as it does not get anymore out of hand, things can continue to be discussed. However, to attack one's character as was done is a logical fallacy. So let's please try to focus on the particular subject and not the person. Yes, I realize the border is very thin due to the fact that it involved a person doing something, but discussing the idea of what is hacking/glitching etc may be beneficial to others.

Alright, rant mode it was, but I'll stick by my opinions. Taking mediocre stands on modified content (modified for personal gain, advantage, the like) widens the gray area for server admins and ultimately damages the community, IMO.
