    Mod Trailers, Why oh why....

Why oh why do the mod teams lack in the trailer department, your trying to sell your mod not ruin it, Ive seen piles of trailers for mods and not one grabbed my attention to think, man F**K YEH! I want that... Yes a trailer is to show off the content in the mod but when it makes the new content look crap then we have a problem and thats what 90% of the mod teams do.

EDIT:What i have seen in some videos: A Crap choice of music to go with the footage, Clips of the game slapped together making no sense, effects that just purely annoy folk, that are trying to make the video look remotely good.

Q.) Whats wrong with the above?
    A.) Everything.

Top Things to include in your trailer:
    • Good Music
    • A Story, all good trailers have a story.
    • The Correct Effects For The Correct Scenes (Not aload of crap slapped together)
    • Finally some good footage (Properly edited ect...)

Ive said this to a few mod teams, they have a brilliant all time great mod and trailers that wouldn't sell heaven to a dead person. You gotta grip the hearts of the fans, most of the time 5 to 10 minutes of nothing, thats what you watch, would i want to download the mod if i didnt already know about it...hmm no... You can pile as much special effects in as you want, the end product will still look crap because theres no heart.

Usually Theres weeks left before the release of any great mod, thats more than enough time to create something spectacular. A Trailer needs a story, when you watch a movie trailer what do you see, you see snippets of the story building into something great and then they leave you on edge wanting more.

The original BF2 and BF2 special forces trailers, what were they? BF2, the PLA taking over the oil fields, thats a story unfolding there, what about BF2 SF, whats that, its the special forces group taking over the stronghold on devils perch, a story right there. Story is what you need, not aload of crap that makes no sense slapped together with some effects thrown in and a poor choice of music.

If mod teams, you just can't pull a good trailer off, let someone else do it, i know i'd do it, loads of good video directors would.

Don't let your brilliant mod look like a rusty shed.

Forgotten Hope 2 always has brilliant trailers. They are not trying to make the mod seem like something it's not and they always use great music.

I said same to the PR team, they have a brilliant all time great mod and trailers that wouldn't sell heaven to a dead person. ehhh, I don't remember you saying anything like that to us but if you think you can do better why don't you offer to make trailers for the mod teams? I tried clicking your links in your sig to see if there was any videos there but one link brought up a more or less blank site and the other wasn't there....

I thought the AI-X trailer was pretty good tbh and most people call me over critical on them, main bits which I thought where bad was showing too much of the same thing and shots showing some bad bits of the engine etc but overall I thought it was pretty well done.

Again, most of the people who make these mod trailers are modellers / coders who have other work to be doing at the same time...
Now personally this is the best Trailer I've seen for any BF2 mod, even thou the guy who made it is IMO (and most ppls) a f*cking maniac he did manage to make a damn good trailer for us (PR) back in v0.5

you can download a high quality one on our site, http://www.realitymod.com/media-videos.html
      v0.5 trailer.

Many other mods FH2 etc have also made some good trailers for there mod, I thought the new FH2 trailer was really good and showed off the mod's gameplay and new content quite well :)

anyways have you made any videos yourself? I would like to see them if you have since you think ours are so "crap"?

Re: Mod Trailers, Why oh why....

Both of those PR trailers were excellent -- especially the last.

It's easy for one person to demand excellence from others at no cost to themselves. If these trailers were so ineffective, there would be no one playing these mods. I know that's not the case as our AIX servers have been so busy we're probably going to need to add more after AIX 2.0 releases and PR is more popular than ever.

Bloodhound has a point, yet I think he's overly critical and the logic is flawed. Sure, the things listed would be great, but as for "brilliant" music -- what mod team can afford to purchase it? Or has a composer on staff?

Ahh copyrighted by Pixel, nicely done sir, i will change the brillaint music thing, i had summat in my head that was seriously flawed. Well played Sonic

And everyone else, i never said these things were crap, these trailers, i said if you slapped randomness together and put a song to it that would be crap, never said the trailers were crap.

As for Sir.Xalias, a brilliant video director, editor, i like his work.

And did Sir do the PR 0.8 trailer? hmm...

Very nice trailer, nice music, nice scenes, flowed smoothly, showed what was new, had 3 mini stories involved, no real confusion, straight to the point and all within 1 minute 38 seconds. Now that is a trailer.

Re: Mod Trailers, Why oh why....

ehhh, there is nothing really different between that and the PR trailers, shows content, combat and gameplay. No "storyline" as such, its not like "Captain Awesome must go and destroy this nuclear silo single handedly and save the day from all of humanity". Really there is nothing that different from any of the other trailers... In the PR trailers you also see combat shots very much like you see in the FH2 trailer etc. I think you are just trying to dig yourself out of a whole.

The only thing that is that different is the FH2 trailer is much shorter, but from what we gather our community members like a longer trailer. Really that in the end is down to personal preference if you like a long or short trailer but that isn't really much to back up your argument....

Re: Mod Trailers, Why oh why....

I must concur with Rhino. That was much the same as the other trailers we've viewed but much shorter. I admit the AIX version seemed to go on a little long after watching that it seemed about the right length.

It made me want to go play FH2, but the other trailers made me want to play those mods, too.

I'm not convinced by your reasoning, BH. I understand your point, but I don't fully agree with how you've presented yourself today. IMO you could have chosen to enjoy or ignore what you saw but instead decided to complain about what you could not do yourself and what you don't have the power to change.

My intention is not to attack you personally but the proposition you put forth that mod teams don't do a good enough job promoting their work through these teaser videos. I simply don't agree.

                        Cheers mate.

Re: Mod Trailers, Why oh why....

Rhino for some reason your taking this personally as if i'm attacking PR and Only PR, i'm not even attacking anyone:

The difference is, between the promo video for 0.8 and FH2 is:

FH2: they stick to one concept see it through then another one.

PR: PR Pure Randomness and confusion.

I'll go through the 0.8 video bit by bit to tell you what i personally thought was off, same with the FH2 trailer, i wont talk about music and effects because thats a different topic.

Opening 0.00 to 1.07: Perfect wouldn't change a thing, beginning of a great trailer.

1.08 to 1.18: What is that? its pure randomness that makes no sense, doesn't need to be there and is boring, all it does is add an extra 10 seconds of unneeded footage.

1.19 to 1.56: Huh? whats going on, we've been dropped into the middle of a warzone, whats going on, are we looking at a new map, or new weapons, vehicles? I have no idea makes no sense.

1.57 to 2.38: TANK BATTLE! this should be fun, opens up great until...we have random tanks just driving around, then we have an anti air thing doing nothing, in the 31 second scene i counted 7 seconds of action, and it was all randomly placed, again i was lost to where the new material was supposed to be, was it a new tank, a new map?

2.39 to 2.53: Random Scene, again no need for it to be there, was a bore fest, added 14 seconds of uneeded footage, i wouldn't mind if again i knew what was supposed to be new.

2.54 to 3.19: Again i'm in the middle of a warzone that i have no idea what i'm supposed to be looking at, all i saw was the same thing i saw earlier on with soldiers shooting at each other...Was the map new, vehicles, weapons?

3.20 to 3.37: The Blackhawk down scene: i happened to really like this scene, but if i was being critical, i'd say...random yet again, whats it doing there... But because it was done so brilliantly and it was, it seemed to push a breath of air into the machine yet again, got me thinking, NOW WE ARE TALKING SUNSHINE!

3.38 to 3.56: And my NOW WE ARE TALKING just turned into, now we are walking...walking far away again... Random, whats it doing there, same thing again, soldiers shooting showing nothing special, if its a new map, show us the new map, if its a new weapon make a point fo showing the new weapon, it makes no sense, i dont know what im looking at, at this point im confused and bored.

3.57 to 4.19: i'm gunna split this up, Airfield, Tornado = NOW WE ARE TALKING! Tanks randomly firing into nothingness and randomly driving = Ohh ffs, here we go again. If your going to focus on something focus on that one thing and make it make sense, again random footage uneeded.

4.20 to 4.30: Ohh look dropped into the middle of a warzone yet again where i don't know whats going on, what i'm supposed to be looking at, confusion.

4.30 to 5.37: What is that a minute and odd of nothing, you don't put a credit line on a promo, and if your going to its no more than a 3 second job let alone 1 minute and 7 seconds.

Now lets take a look at FH2, keeping in mind the notes they supplied along with the video:

This week we are proud to present the Forgotten Hope 2.15 trailer. This trailer features many (but not all) of the new things we have added in our latest patch. You will see the Tiger tank in action on Mareth Line, the grappling hooks on Giarabub and the tough street fights on Tunis. The 2.15 Trailer was filmed and edited by Bob Sacamano.

Straight away lists all 3 things to look out for:

Opening 0.00 to 0.42: Beautiful opening scene, moves straight into what they said it would, there are the tanks i'm looking out for, nice work, little story in there, the tanks meet and begin battle, perfect scene.

0.43 to 1.04: Nice smooth transition between scenes, another little story unfolds, soldiers running upto a stronghold, bam theres the second thing i was told to look out for the graplin hooks, i understand the story i'm enjoying it.

1.05 to 1.25: Next mini story opens up, exactly like they said, shows us the war on the streets, showing the main part of the new map, looks cool.

1.26 to 1.38: after the title finishes, they hold an 8 second credit line, 8 seconds, they get all the info there perfect, no messing around.

So to your question, whats the difference, everything is, their trailers are well thought out, they get straight to the point, the provide needed information, and it only lasts 1 minute 38 seconds. I would rather watch that trailer 4 times over than your one trailer of 5 and a half minutes, because it draws me in everytime i watch it and doesn't confuse, bore or annoy me.

I mean none of this in offense, you do what every other mod team does and butcher a brilliant product, you put all that time and effort into something and then you go and balls up the presentation.

no, I think your saying all mod teams, and you where saying FH2 as well before you took there new promo, are all doing a crap job at making promo videos.

Now ehhh, the bits you have highlighted above is that FH2 can easily have a promo vid that is in one type of environment since at the moment they only have the North Africa campaign (as well as a bit of the Mediterranean). PR has vast differences we need to "promote", ie, The middle east with 2 factions, MEC and the insurgents, Chian with the PLA, Eastern Europe with the Militia, now tell me a better way to show all of that, + all our new content without having flicks to different bits? make a bunch of separate promo vid for each faction? that would go down well... if you in fact look at the FH2 promo it is not all on the same map they are a few maps in there. There is no real "storyline" at all to it, maybe your definition of storyline is very different from what mine is but generally a storyline is a general plot that you can follow and ehhh, all we really see in both the PR', FH2's and the AI-X trailer is just combat scenes?

any ways I suggest if you think you know what such a good promo video is you should try making one and show us all how its done?
