    CoD:WaW Game Sounds

So having seen the gametrailer.com episode about CoD:WW/WaW/5, they talked about how they did the sounds in the game.

For each and every single hand gun/rifle/machine gun, they shot and recorded each one with a number of different microphones at different angles and put it in the game.

I have read on a number of different forums about people complaining about how they don't sound realistic and the weapons sound weak.

So what is your take on that? Do people expect a certain gun to make a certain noise and anything else is weak? Do people just have bad soundcards/hearing/headphones and thats why they dont truly hear it? Are the sounds just not up to snuff because of the recording of them?

Personally, I think people simply expect a gun to sound a certain way because of movies or whatever and when they here the real thing, they can't believe thats it.

    I'd say it's a combination of

    1) people who don't know anything about weapons expecting them to sound a certain way from movies/TV.

    and

    2) people who do know about weapons, having fired them at a gun range under specific conditions (closed indoor, semi-open outdoor, totally open outdoor, etc), remembering how they sounded under those conditions, then not hearing the same thing in-game. COD:WW apparently has different sounds for different conditions (which is a good idea), but most developers only record under one specific set.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is also some sort of audio variable that is lost during the recording process. Maybe something that the human ear can process "live", but that doesn't get captured well on recordings (eg. some specific channel/frequency of treble, bass, echo, etc). Like when you make a recording of a conversation, then when you play it back people don't always sound exactly the same as you remember them in-person.

I'm guessing, but people who shoot the guns would feel the kick, and it'd feel more powerful, plus it probably sounds alot louder in small rooms where it would echo... whereas the recordings seem to be set to a lower volume, so they sound weaker...

You can't get the same 'kick' feeling from using a gun in games... not till we have matrix style stuff which give you electric pulses to simulate the kick of the gun...

I'm guessing they would have to compress the sound files, because if it was true HD with the highest quality codec or whatever, then the sound file will probably be 4-5mb for just a 2 second shot that can be 'looped' to simulate gun shots...

I've shot too many guns...which makes we well placed in this thread.

When I'm indoors I want a LOUUUUD BANG when I shoot a gun. When I'm outdoors I expect a really nice echo like the L96A1 in BF2 or the SAW in COD4 when you stop firing.

When I'm in a tunnel I expect my ears blown out by the loudness of it.

And I want the beautiful PIIING when my M1 Garand clip comes out, telling me, BAYONET TIME!

          Think of it this way.

When I shoot my HK USP .45 at the range, I am wearing hearing protection or I am going deaf.

I don't know anyone that wears hearing protection when playing an fps.

Alot gets lost in the recording process and it seems impossible to duplicate the sound in it's original state.

When I played the XBOX beta one of the things I enjoyed was the sounds of the guns. The problem was people did not die to my rifle

On Xbox and PC i think they sound wimpy, and ive fired/heard the real guns fired in real life, outdoors. Since there a large company, i would hope, that they would have appropriate recording systems. They supposedly also had a group of historical ppl on the job aswell so i'd hope they could help.

im sure someone will come out w/a sound pack to address this issue, until then...
your stuck w/it....turn up the volume?

The guns sound wimpy in the Beta even compared to other games. CoD2 had a nice thump to the Tommy gun, and a satisfying thump to the M1 and other rifles. I am hoping there is just something wrong with the Beta. Most of the videos of the game have the weapons sounding better.

Most guns whether indoor or out are loud, hence the need for hearing protection at the range. The M1 Garand sounds like a cannon at the indoor range where I've fired it as does the Lee Enfield. The Tommy and the PPSH both sound a bit tinnier indoors but both are still loud.

I recently fired a 1928 Thompson at the FBI Academy at Quantico at their outdoor range. That bastard was loud even there.

The guns in the Beta don't sound good at all. I believe/hope that it is just because it is the Beta.

I am sure they will sound better in the retail game. Hope, Hope.

Anything can happen, but I would not get your hopes up. A dev posted a couple of weeks ago on the cod.com forum that stuff like sounds was "pretty much" what you'll see in the Final version. But, you never know...maybe there was enough public dissatisfaction that they re-mixed/made them louder.

On PC at least, modders should be able to use better sound files from other games on custom servers.

At first, the sound was horrible! I then turned on my x-fi crystalizer, rock eq, other Creative enhancements and put the sound at 5.1, much better! They did a good job at including various sounds and utilizing all channels.

On the point of the guns sounding wimpy, how is this different than any other CoD? lol The guns in CoD games always sound wimpy to me. Granted, Desert Eagle is a beast, but most of CoD's guns are always very 'trebley' and need more bass imo. MoHAirborne, a flop as it was, had AMAZING gun sounds in it! Very powerful. Maybe someone can convert those sound files over to this game.

Well if you guys aren't playing on HIGH SOUND QUALITY it's gona sound like paintball guns. So before you complain check and see if it's on high. If it's not then stop complaining and play red orchestra. The sounds are fine, they sound very real.

As an old soldier, the sounds in CoD5 seem spot-on to me. I am also running my sound settings on high, too.

Folks watch too many entertainment shows with "enhanced" audio -- meaning you're not really hearing the authentic noises, but what the Sound Designer wants you to hear. I agree that the volume could be slightly increased around 7-10% for weapon firing sounds, but the actual noise made by the weapons seem authentic to my ears.

Just my two cents -- not worth much these days =)

^ Yeah, I think that's what most people are trying to say about the weap sounds...they're a little weak/soft, and could stand to be a bit louder. Crunch was right, that was one of the few things that Airborne did pretty well.
