My Pre-release, Far Cry 2 mini review

Well i recieved far cry 2 this morning, two days early from shopto.net so i going to do a little mini review of what i think so far

Gameplay: so far ive been bundled into a harsh hostile environment, where if you leave the ceasfire zone your going to get shot at. You find missions by finding certain factions and doing missions that involve aassasination, theft and destruction.

Guns seem less accurate than in for example call of duty 4 or crysis, but ive only had the crappy ones so far, 1-2 shots in the head seem to bring people down, wheres it takes around 3 to the body with an G3-AK47

guns also jam, a little too much for my liking, guns you buy from the shop new are reliable whereas the ones you pick up of dead enemies jam up after a couple of clips you can unjam them but it takes some time and youll probably be dead by the time your charachter manages to unjam the weapon

    Graphics:

im running it on highest settings with 2aa 1680x1050 and it looks great i was never really a fan of the graphics on crysis it looked all too colourful and bright but they seem to have got the colours right and there is a fair amount of detail too, 24 hour day night cycle is another excellent aspect and the weather changes alot from heat to rainstorms which is really cool

For highest settings the system you might need would be an quad core >2.4ghz or something like an C2D E8400, 2GB of RAM and a ATI 4850/NV 9800gtx i get around 35-50fps on my system

    Animations:

ubisoft have really tried to push this as an integral part of far cry 2, for example if i raid an enemy checkpoint there is always stuff to blow up and burn, i can set the bush on fire and it will cause everything to set on fire from grass to car engines and cause an inferno moving across the dry grass if your car is damaged you have to repair it, if you get hit you have to heal yourself which is a nice little feature

here a screenshot of car repair

apart from blowing up stuff gets thrown around alot in expolsions and with a good helping of blood and gore when you shoot the crap out of someone :)

you see savvanna animals too, which i really like such as zebra gazelle and eagles i think other animals such as lion are in but ive not seen one yet

AI: the AI seem more intelligent than your regular shooter but havent shown advanced tactics to me yet, for example if a gunshot goes off in the vacinity they will talk to each other and say something like 'do you see anything' 'i think i see four people' and will comb an area looking for you they will retreat and find cover, they will run from granades and bush fires, the AI will also chase you relentlessley in nearby vehicles if your trying to drive away

Thats great and all but the icing on the cake would have been if the AI always worked as a unit than indiduals (F.E.A.R springs to mind for excellent AI) in F.E.A.R some will scout while others cover their back ive not seen any of this so far, maybe this is because there not military just untrained militia and it is probably too early to tell and i have not tried it on the hardest difficulty but so far the AI is good and challenging without being brutally effective

ill maybe update this to a full review when i finish the game, and please give me your thoughts, they are very much appreciated

Wow, great review death. I watched the video review of this on gamespot this morning, they gave it an 8.5 mainly due to a mediocre storyline.

I see you can befriend mercenaries throughout villages to gain "experience" points.

Send some more pics, they look great.

Sounds like the AI is acting like it's supposed to...you wouldn't expect a group of idiots with AK47s to be as good as a squad of marines

Re: My Pre-release, Far Cry 2 mini review

haha yes praise shopto, got my copy and have been playing it

I see you found the barret sniper, I was in love with that gun and its ability to deafen me with each shot.. then I wore it out so much the dam thing exploded in my hands lol

found the M4 as well, thats a beast

look for safehouses that aren't gaurded by anyone, they usually have a beefy weapon inside, found the rotating barrel grenade launcher and the gas operated shotgun and dam they are good guns

I have so many rough diamons (all I have bought at the dealer is the silenced Makharov and the MP5) + a few upgrades, I am waiting to buy the barret and M4 etc

so far I am loving it, the post processing effects, the immersion, the entire setting is brilliantly made and executed, from the immense sound effects, to the weather effects (wind!!! blowing trees and bushes around!) to the entirely satisfying combat

I am loving this game so far

AI was pretty competent for me as well, if I hid (and you can hide and be stealthy) they had a tough time but still did well. Going in all guns blazing you get quickly surrounded and they call for reinforcements, makes for some great gunfights

most important of all though, no bugs or crashes of any kind at all

edit : oh and on my system am running 1680x1050 everything on very high, works perfectly, no slowdown whatsoever, Crysis looks slightly better imo but this game just performs so well

Re: My Pre-release, Far Cry 2 mini review

I've been hugely impressed by all of the SP vids I've seen so far.

However, the MP vids have left me somewhat "meh". The map editor itself looks great, but actual gameplay clips I've seen have been nothing special. Hopefully that's just from lousy vids.

Once people start playing the MP, I'd love to hear more first-hand reviews of that from actual people here.

I have heard a lot of people complain about the SecuRom that Ubisoft used. Is it an issue to be worried about if I get this one for the PC?

it shouldn't be...5 activations and can be activated on 3 computers at one time. plus you get the activations back when you uninstall a copy.

The game looks good :) Not better than Crysis but Ubisoft stripped the Cryengine 2 down to almost nothing so yeah...
Not sure if I'm gonna buy it, I'll wait a little longer for more reviews.
