fairly old machine lags on 50+ players server

Hi, my 3 y/o system,
AMD 3500+ (2.2Ghz)
2x1 GB ram
7800GT video(BFG OC)
runs smoothly on 32 players server.

But if i play on a server that has 50 players or more, it began to lag heavily. My connection was good and ping was around 50.

If i get a new dual core CPU such as Intel E8400(plus new mobo and DDR2) or similar, will i be able to play smoothly on 64 players server? or i also need a new video card as well?

Well, yes, you would, but you should be able to play fine with your current system.

i kind of remember i played on full 64 server before. it wasn't too bad. maybe i need to format my PC? Thanks Tomeis.

I've never experience a problem like that before so I don't have any 100% certain advice but I'd recommend you defrag your hard drive, run a virus scan, update PB, and see if there's anything hogging up a lot of memory. BF2 on the highest settings on big maps with lots of people can use up to 1GB or so of RAM so if you have another program (or multiple) eating up lots of RAM, too, you'll start lagging if you hit about 90% memory usage. And I know Vista can use about 800mb (but goes down to 500mb when a game is loaded)

If you've still got problems after trying those things then see what other people have to say.

Nice suggestions buddy.
i defragged my system once a week, got PB updated. as to virus... my system runs well on 32-player server. anyway, i'll run AVG before i go to sleep.

oh.. i'm still using xp sp2. don't want vista at this moment :)

I have that exact system with an 8600gt and can play on 64 player servers, full.

I dont see any problem with it.
