I am having an issue where if I try to launch BF2 it doesn't really open yet the task manager shows BF2.exe as active. I can't seem to figure out what's going on. I was able to launch it fine the first time then rebooted and can't anymore. I even reinstalled BF2 last night and was able to get back on the first time but now can't again. Everytime, the bf2.exe shows as active in task manager but the program itself does not seem to launch.

My default account is as an administrator, and I have tried clicking on the icon to run as admin. Also, I've set the icon to use XP SP2 compatibility mode and still nothing.

Before you do anything, make sure you don't run it in XP compability mode before you try anything else.

Try a repatch. Worked for me long ago.

Try deleting your Battlefield 2 folder in My Documents. If I play on XP then vista using the same Battlefield 2 profiles I have the same problem.

That did it, thank you!! Now I have to remember how to allow duplicate controls on vehicles. It's been a long time since I set them up initially.

Your welcome. Grab the controls.con from your old profile and copy it into the new profile. You'll find it in your old file 'My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001'

Depending on how many profiles you have, your default profile may be in 0002 or 0003. If you open up the Global.con file in your old 'My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles' with notepad, you'll see which profile is your default in the line 'GlobalSettings.setDefaultUser "0001"' Then open up the 000X folder and grab the control.con. I also get My Favorate servers too from General.con and c/p them into the new profile. All the lines that start with GeneralSettings.addFavouriteServer I get. Hopefully you still have the deleted folder in the Recylce bin to do all that.

I copied my entire BF2 folder from My Documents on XP and saved it. So will I get issues again if I just copy the controls.con file?

You won't have problems just using the controls.con file. For me I think the problem lies somewhere in General.con.

Well now I have new issues. I can load into BF2 fine but as soon as I click join server it crashes to desktop.

Edit: I've tried my copy of 2142 and that's doing it now too.

You could try system restore,
Roll back any drivers you have updated in the last few days,
Uninstall any windows updates that have been installed in the last few days,
Seems like a few people have been getting this same error lately, if you fix it let us know how.

Is it a legitimate copy, because some software is known to run poorly on cracked OS's?
