In RL, its next to impossible to destory a M1 Tank, so that wouldnt of worked in game, they would keep coming at you, be like that battery bunny, they keep going and going and going...

Anti tank warfare is a science and an art. It is easy to destroy an Abrams. Pictures and video of these events gets classified, banned and removed.

e.g....
Sir,
Please remove the photos of the M1 Abrams destroyed by mines. The photos are not cleared for public distribution.
Thank You,

But there are still others available like this one showing 2 Abrams being blown up with IED's.

In the Arab wars the Israeli Merkava tanks were able to kill entire T90 crews with a single solid tungsten round fired from 4km away. The force of the blast would buckle the hull to such an extent that thousands of metal splinters pinged around the inside of the tanks, passing through the bodies of the occupants several times.

one M1A1 was disabled by a recoilless rifle round that had penetrated the rear engine housing, and punctured a hole in the right rear fuel cell, causing fuel to leak onto the hot turbine engine. After repeated attempts to extinguish the fire, the decision was made to destroy or remove any sensitive equipment. Oil and .50 caliber rounds were scattered in the interior, the ammunition doors were opened and several thermite grenades ignited inside. Another M1 then fired a HEAT round in order to ensure the destruction of the disabled tank. The tank was completely disabled but still intact. Later, an AGM-65 Maverick and two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles were fired into the tank to finish its destruction. Remarkably, the tank still appeared to be intact from the exterior

This meant Abrams tanks could hit Iraqi tanks before the enemy got in range—a decisive advantage in this kind of combat. In friendly fire incidents, the front armor and fore side turret armor survived direct APFSDS hits from other M1A1s
http://www.gulflink.osd.mil/du_ii/du_ii_tabh.htm
Six M1A1s were allegedly hit by 125 mm tank fire in the Gulf war official report, but the impacts were largely ineffectual, Zaloga, page 38.
But on no occasion anti-tank guided weapons or anti-tank mines struck the US MBTs, Nevertheless, the campaign saw very similar performance from the tank with no Abrams crew member being lost to hostile fire during the invasion of Iraq http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...earned2003.ppt
No, its very hard to destory one, you can disable them, but it takes a lot to destory em. In the first gulf war, only one was put out of action by an Iraqi MBT due to a KE Round hitting something it shouldnt of. Has a great history for any MBT.

Re: Dump all tanks!

Yeah, it's a science and an art. To destroy them you need to disable them first. I believe that besides explosives (mines, ied's etc) you'd need LGM's to take them out in one hit.

That's where the art comes in. Disable it first then do anything to destroy it. But it depends how you define destroy. I remember the disabled Bradley on the street in Iraq. It was the sticks and stones of the peasants vs. the war machine. In the end setting it on fire was the undoing of the occupants as they waited for backup. Even though the Bradley was still in one piece, I'd consider it destroyed.

I'm not really up to date with modern anti tank weapons. But surely modern variants of the Spandrel and Kornet exist that could take out a tank in one hit? Maybe even an Abrams? Dunno?

Re: Dump all tanks!

I doubt it very much, the new M1s will have better depleted uranium armor and Armor upgrades include reactive armor on the sides of the tank and slat armor (similar to that on the Stryker) on the rear to protect against rocket-propelled grenades and other shaped charge warheads.

Nothing is destoryed if it can be fixed or was fixed.

A 9M133 Kornet couldnt do more then a big dent to a M1 unlike the damage they did to the Israeli Merkava tanks which are weaker.

A Transparent Armor Gun Shield and a thermal sight system are added to the loader's top-mounted M240B 7.62 mm machine gun, and a Kongsberg Gruppen Remote Weapon Turret carrying a .50 caliber machine gun (again similar to that used on the Stryker) is in place of the tank commander's original .50 caliber machine gun mount, wherein the commander had to expose himself to fire the weapon manually. An exterior telephone allows supporting infantry to communicate with the tank commander.

The TUSK system is a field-installable kit that allows tanks to be upgraded without needing to be recalled to a maintenance depot.

While the reactive armor may not be needed in most situations in maneuver warfare, items like the rear slat armor, loader's gun shield, infantry phone (which has already seen use on Marine Corps M1A1s as early as 2003), and Kongsberg Remote Weapons Station for the .50 caliber machine gun will be added to the entire M1A2 fleet over time.

Although I find this stuff fascinating...

I'm gonna take a stab at this and say that it would be less frustrating if the armor in BF2 wasn't as susceptible to sandbags and potholes as they are to ERYX rockets and bombs.

Nice video Lazza. Thanks for posting that. So seldom do we see footage of US toys being disabled or destroyed that have been released for "public review".

Re: Dump all tanks!

Video is a fake. The way it was shot, it looks very doctored and insurgents are known for doctored tapes. Im going to write it off as a fake as it looks like something CNN plays and then the next week, it comes out that it was fake. Anything on youtube cant be used as a source or to verify anything. Just like those American Soldier Beheadings on Youtube are all fake.

EDIT: This is funny: M1A1 v. Iraqi insurgent

heh

Propaganda is a useful tool and used by both sides you know....

Besides, I think it looks real, looks like the DPI of a cellphone camera phone.

American Soldier Beheadings on Youtube are all fake, so I bet half of the M1 videos are also fake. The sounds and the music in the background adds to the fakeness. I love all the M1 VS Sniper, Guy with rife vids.

Look at this vid, its quite funny too,.

I'm gonna post a video about a guy with a gun vs a guy with a sword.

I'd be willing to bet that a Javelin AT missile could do some pretty severe damage to an M1A1. If the armor on the top of the tank is designed to withstand that type of impact, then we might as well drop a JDAM on the thing to blow it up. I guarantee you it wouldn't survive that.

But yes, making a tank in a game that powerful would just break game balance. Ultimately, you can't have super machines running around.

Im sure Webs we got Little Terrorists running around with Javs and JDAMs :p, man I hope not. Why would we bomb a M1 with a JDAM? thats just a waste of a JDAM and half a waste of a M1.......

I say EA should give us the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb for a A-10 or F117
