Far Cry came out a week after UT2K4. And although BF2 and COD2 came out around the same time, BF2 is a lot more demanding. On the latest version, my old 7800GT wasn't able to run it on the highest settings at 1280x1024 and keep over 60FPS anymore. Version 1.0 it could.

Strap a 90mm fan onto that 6200LE and OC it! On the CPU and RAM you are screwed, but I'm sure you could get to atleast 45 FPS, at 1024x768, drawing distance 70% (video and system ram screw you there), shadows and lighting effects off, AA off and everything else on low/med.

Yeah that's true. I guess it's because BF2 has all the vehicles and stuff.

I'd like to OC my card, but I downloaded RivaTuner, and it said something about not being compatible with my drivers? Is there another OC program I could use?

Dude just spend like $50 on a new video card on ebay.. I'm sure you can afford that.. Even that would probably kill a PCI card.

Either way.. You are going to have to play on all low...

I know it doesn't look good... But I have a AMD 4600 X2 and a radeon 3850 AGP and I play with shadows off/low. Point is, shadows off helps you playing wise.. no shadows or anything for other people to hide in.

Also, your computer may be so slow that you have to run everything on low, AND turn the view distance down. 15 FPS is not playable..

try this, I've found it helps get rid of the occasional lag spikes that happen sometimes.

Reduce the Number of Punkbuster Checks: Punkbuster, as you probably know, is the anti cheating software which comes bundled with BF2 and is required to play on all ranked servers and most public servers. Punkbuster scans your hard-drive for problems every 20 seconds. As you may have guessed, this causes a lot of lag. What we are going to do in this fix is to increase the amount of time in between punkbuster checks to 500 seconds (the maximum amount so don't try anything higher lol). By the way, in case you were worried, this is 100% safe with punkbuster, and will NOT cause any problems with Punkbuster thinking you are a cheater. Punkbuster even recommends this fix on their website. To do this you need to:

1. Join any BF2 online server which is running punkbuster, preferably a ranked one.
2. Once you are in, and respawned somewhere, press the `~(Tilda) key. This key is located on most keyboards above the tab key and to the left of the 1 key.
3. A large white box should drop down with a load of text in it. Type "pb_sleep 500" and hit the enter key.
4. Once you have done this, make sure the box is still up and type "pb_writecfg" to save your settings.

Rename BF2.exe

Although the exact reason why this fix improves the gameplay is unknown, but it is probably that Ati and Nvidia recognise the program BF2.exe as one of their own, so by renaming the file, you turn the game into a normal program, not a resource hungry dinosaur! In 90% of cases this has been known to cause some increase in performance in-game. To do this follow these steps:

1. The first thing you do is find your game directory, the default is C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2
2. Once you have found the directory, locate the file BF2.exe, right click, and select properties.
3. You will then need to change the text in the white box which says "BF2", above the directory on the general tab, you can change it to anything you want! for simplicity, I changed it to BF21.exe once you have done this, CLICK APPLY!
4. The fix is now officially done, but the shortcut on your desktop will now no longer work. To change this, delete the shortcut on your desktop, goto the game directory, and right click on the newly renamed file. Click Send To, then Desktop (Create Shortcut) and you will now have a working shortcut on your desktop!

well fyi, i get 30-35fps with everything on medium, except for dynamic shadows, thats on low. and with 1024 x 768 resoloution :)

Do you have AGP? A friend of mine just gave me a second 7600GT to put in my secondary computer. I can run BF2 on mostly medium with max view distance, geometry, and effects at 40-60 fps. Of course, all lighting effects are turned off. You could probably pick one up for $75-$100. This computer does have a gig of ram though, and I would consider it a necessity.

Naw I only have PCI. Though I am getting a new computer with Dual Pentiums and 2gbs of ram, and PCI-e slots :) That'll probably enable me to run bf2 on medium settings with a high fps
And yeah, at least 1gb ram is a necessity, I went from 512 to 1.3gb and the performance increase is amazing

and my suggestion...this works great for me... before you enter BF2 go Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to the "Processes" tab and find all of the programs running under your name under the "User Name" tab. Delete all of them except explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe. If you have a lot of background programs running in your toolbar like me, this will make a night and day difference.

You mean end the processes right ?
But you should close any programs you are not using before you get into game if you don't have a good amount of system resources.
