No CD key check?

I had a friend come over yesterday, and he installed CoD4 on both of my computers so we could LAN. Apparently CoD4 doesn't check the CD keys because we were able to fight each other and even join online servers with both computers. I was using the unpatched version and Punkbuster was off in the LAN server.

Is this supposed to happen?

Call of Duty allows LANing with the same key; however, you cannot join the same online server having the same key as somebody else.

Even if PB is off, the game will still check for the CD key.

Note that it might work in unranked servers, I don't know actually.

I have two gaming pc's in this house and i have had them both on the same online server using the same cd key..

Note this is for servers, not clients:

pb_sv_guidrelax - Set this to 4 and clients can play with same guid on same server ONLY from same IP (alot of servers/leagues/clan servers use this setting)

However alot of other servers just use pb_sv_guidrelax 0 (default, they don't touch or tweak pbsv.cfg) which will kick for Unknown guids, guids on different IPs and duplicate guids from same IP.

Copied from a pbsv.cfg:

// We reccomend kicking for at least UNKN guids. Below are the possible combinations:
// 0 = Kick for UNKN guid, wrong ip guid and duplicate guid.
// 1 = Kick for wrong ip guid and duplicate guid.

Me and my brother play online together all the time, with 1 copy of the game. It kicks us for duplicate cd key every now and then, but its very rare. He managed to get to level 35 before we were kicked for the first time.

It all depends what the server pb_sv_guidrelax setting is, as Dan said.

There is a bug in COD4 currently, that resets it to 7 on every map change and server restart - so on that note, server admins should add "pb_sv_task 30 300 pb_sv_guidrelax 0" (or whatever their preference is for the setting) to their pbsv.cfg to force the setting back every few minutes.

Just tried it on different IPs. Didn't work lol.

And why should server owners care if people are sharing a game anyways? :p
