Any other suggestions before trying this last option? I'd rather not re-install Vista and all my other apps if I can avoid it.

As you haven't installed to the default location the instructions wont be accurate, you will have to work it out for yourself.

If you are using 64bit Windows the registry entrys are under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node

A high knowledge techie friend who flew in to visit solved the problem. Apparently the problem was a corruption in PACE anti-piracy software. A whole bunch of hidden files needed to be deleted that were not being deleted in the original uninstall. From what I am reading ( and barely understanding), PACE attaches itself to a windows 'kernel' and in effect becomes and extension of the operating system. Thus the corruption could not be solved by reinstall. What an annoying piece of software.

Anyway, thanks all for the advice. I hope this helps others.
