I gonna buy TF2 on a DVD Mondays and i was just asking how that version of the game patches. Since i heard there are a lot of patches/updates released for TF2 and i was wondering if i had to download Steam or just download a patch somewhere.

Re: Buying TF2 on a DVD
TF2 will run through Steam regardless of whether you buy it off steam, individually boxed or in the Orange Box. Not sure whether TF2 individually boxed comes with any patches, came out a few months ago so there will be updates you'll need to get regardless
Steam will auto-update your game for you. AFAIK you can't download the patches separately anyway. -

Re: Buying TF2 on a DVD
Because i'm buying it on DVD and i don't know how i could patch it, because i didn't download it through Steam. And all my friends who had the game downloaded it through Steam so they had Steam that could update itself.
It's my first game which works with Steam and my first Source engine game, so i don't really know how things work with Steam.Comment

Re: Buying TF2 on a DVD
Its simple. Put the disk in and install normally. It was also ask you to install steam. Do it. When you first open Steam it will automatically download all update for any game which needs it, which in this case is TF2. So just go eat something and come back and youll be fine and ready to play. See you on the battlefield :salute:Originally posted by Toxic_WolfBecause i'm buying it on DVD and i don't know how i could patch it, because i didn't download it through Steam. Disclaimer: For some reason my steam doesn't always complete the "automatic" download if I don't ask it to launch the game. Its simple. Put the disk in and install normally. I don't know if others have that problem, but it is worth a try if your TF2 update seems to hang.Comment

Re: Buying TF2 on a DVD
usually on retail copies it will just install steam first, then unlock some of the game content and your internet does the rest
Although I always have retail, and it has never given me problems
if you get poop download rates just pause the update, wait a bit then restart it and you will get shunted to another server and hopefully a max rateComment
