i don't see how stats can bother anyone.. its pretty simple really if u don't care about stats then don't keep track of them and visa versa.. it would be like saying u hate the taste of chocolate and the world is a worse off place for having it, just don't eat it...

I personally like the stat system as it gives me a good indication as to how i match up to other players and friends as well as keeping track of things like Kill death ratio and headshots etc, which I'm interested in :)

As for people who are "stat crazy" well.. i don't really see how that would have an impact on ur gaming to the point where u wish there was no stat system, but maybe I'm missing something can u explain that?

For people who are too focused on their stats, the issue is that they change their style of play to suit whatever goal they're going for. Instead of helping their team the best way possible, they are going for achievements (ie. BF2 examples: sitting on top of a hill with a sniper rifle...driving around endlessly in an APC...taking a helo up that they can barely pilot and just flying for hrs and hrs...joining specific maps to try to get certain ribbons...using only a pistol/knife, etc). It takes the focus off of team play, and puts it on individual play.

We see this at a lesser level on COD4 (which doesn't bother me as much), where people try out different weapons and even if they suck with them, they keep using them until they get their headshots challenge. Or using certain perks (ie. Martyrdom, Last Stand, etc) or styles of play to complete challenges. With COD4, however, because the challenges are shorter, the annoyance factor isn't as bad. BF2 has such epic damn "challenges" that it takes forever. Also, because of the global stat tracking in BF2, the "e-penis" stuff comes into play, and again people's playing styles change to suit their whatever stats they're trying to pump up.

The robust stats of BF2 initially attracted many people to the game, but also drove a lot of people away once they realized the futility of it - the time needed to achieve these things, and many also hated how teamwork broke down. There is also the point that when you do stat tracking, you automatically divide the gaming community because you have to have ranked and unranked servers.

      ..

Anyway, back to the topic of this thread...COD4 isn't "stat crazy". There's nothing wrong with some little goals and achievements in the game to help make the game last longer for some people, and get them to try out different weapons that they might not normally try. :) I think they did a decent job with the stats in COD4, walking the fine line, with my only gripe is that any sort of stat-tracking causes a rift between ranked/unranked servers, and divides the community, making custom map/mod servers harder to populate.

ahh okies i get you :) yeah i can understand BF2 stats got a bit frustrating, i myself never tried for any of its goals mainly due to the time and effort needed to complete them. But as for CoD4 i normally find myself only going a bit out of my way every now and then to complete the goals and most of them are achievable just by playing normally.

My original post wasn't really directed at the challenges more towards just ur normal stats like kill death ratio and headshots and hours played etc because i know a few people don't like those either because apparently it stops alot of players taking risks.

I only really keep track of my normal stats and not soo much my challenges unless i know i can easily get a challenge without altering the outcome of my teams game i.e. the challenge where u have to shoot ur own explosive device through a wall and kill someone, i don't think ill be doing that too soon unless im bored and theres only few player :p
