Please help me Remove/Block Ad's from 2142 !

hey everyone, fellow long time gamer here.

have come back to 2142 after taking a break due to that game loading up
then going to a black screen and exiting out bug. no idea how i fixed it,
but luckily the game loads up now.

i stopped watching television over 8 years ago, mainly because
i dont respect it and do not enjoy the ideals of forced marketting,
mass marketting etc. long story short.

so yesterday , when i saw billboards EVERYWHERE in my 3 hours of playing
the game for a television show.. i'm going nuts.

i notice that theres several posts on the internet, on this website among
others, that give information on ports to block. i blocked those ports
( 17475 , 9961, 9962 ) but the ad's are still there.

i notice while monitoring my connection with a program such as
peer guardian, i receive connections from fake p2p hosts, and
ign entertainment (owned by newscorp / rupert murdoch ) .
after loading up 2142.

please someone help a fellow gamer out.
this totally ruins the immersion of a game.

if you have differing opinions about these ideas here, mass marketting, tv,
thats fine. to each their own. personally i detest them and have
made every possible effort to avoid it. im not looking to start a flame
battle or anything other than seeking help to block this traffic to my machine.

Have you tried deleting your cache since blocking ports?

no, good idea though.
do you know where the cache is stored in the 2142 directory?
i found C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Battlefield 2142\LogoCache

but those are just from server logos

then just tried to remove
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Battlefield 2142\mods\bf2142\cache
rebuilt the shaders and stuff, and the tv show is still there on the boards

You used to be able to block them, and even insert your own, but I think that all changed a patch or two ago. If I'm wrong and there is still a way to insert your own, I would love to know.

I believe the cache file is radial.idb, try doing a search for it on you computer
I no longer remember if it is located in "My documents" or in the main BF 2142 install directory.

Blocking the ad provider will prevent new ads from being uploaded, but the old ones will remain in the cache. Until you delete it of course.

They changed to a more secure DB format, but blocking is still easy enough.

i spraypaint them with something more interesting.
what do you do when you look at yourself in the mirror,
with advertising on your t shirt? :salute:
basically my point is brand names, brand you.
i dont support advertising, and not looking for more stupid comments.
its hard enough living in america, where virtually the whole of
the land is COVERED with this crap.
i play games to leave this world, and immerse into something else.

... back to the topic at hand.

i could not locate radial.idb , and ended up running the file block.cmd
didnt fix it. so i tried reinstalling the game, repatched.
and prior to reinstall, i removed all battlefield 2142 folder/files.

any idea what i could be doing wrong? did i miss something?

When i had the game installed, i blocked the ads the easy way. I just added rule to my firewall(F-Secure), to block any connections from ip range 72.3.184.144 - 72.3.184.159.

This method blocks the ads, so you have the NS ones still(because they are included in a patch... i think). But no more GhostRider ones or anything else...

theres what billboards look like for me now.
much better.

i'm blocking port 25 with a freeware program called emsa port blocker.
had to reinstall the game , as deleting the files from the previously
mentioned cache spots did nothing.
and i couldnt find the mentioned radial file.

That's how my ad's looked like too... Like i said, i only had to create rule to F-Secure.

About that Radial file, if it's the same one what im thinking. You can get it to show up, by going to "folder settings" -> tick 'show hidden folders' -> untick 'hide protected system files'(im not sure about the term, coz my XP is Finnish). That way you should be able to see the file...

But anyways, good that you got your ads figured out..

Well I actually had similar problem, I had a static ip for like 2 years and I kept getting ads etc. When I dissabled the static ip the ads were gone.

Ah! atebit is ok by me, do you know that the MFI furniture sale now goes on forever, nar its not just restricted to just after Christmas, you know when you just mashed down 6 kilos of Turkey and Spuds on Christmas day, what comes on the Bloody tele , them bloody adverts, we also get Orbital Strikes by Confused.com, bloody car insurance freeks.

The file is named radial.cdb, hence why you didn't find it.

I can't actually remember seeing any ads in this game what so ever but I'm usually to busy keeping track of my enemies so I wouldn't notice anyway
