Yes you should upgrade. I was the same way, I had a bottleneck with my P4. Then I got an intel 2.4Ghz dual core, and its like a whole new game.

Defragging your disc will make a minor difference to load times nothing more. 2142 doesn't rely heavily on processor speed unless your playing 64 player maps and have all your effects set to high. The best option for you would be to get an 8800 or 9600 class GFX card. I don't think the 8600 is all that hot despite being an 8*** series card.

I have a 7900GS and a core duo 2 e6300 and run at 1680*1050 with most things high and get good framerates. A 9600 is pretty cheap to buy (circa £100) and you can sell your 8600 on ebay.

dude your processor should be fine as long as you dont run any other programs. bf never uses more than one processor so it wont make you any better. as long as you only run bf. i'm not sure in it but first search how the processor is connected to the mobo. for example an "old" p4 is connected on an different way than an "old" dual core(not core 2 duo/quad). i am not sure about newer p versions. if you have socket 666(i thought) you can buy an old dual core. these are cheap but wont not as fast as newer versions.
oh btw i have an 8600 and i can play everything on high with 60 fps at 32 players. i dont know how much i get on average on higher servers as i never play on them.

As talked about in the other thread. The recommended power supply for my graphics card is 350w, but I am using a 250w one. Do you think that may of affected my fps in any way?

Oh god yes it could. Get a new one, NOW.

You could potentially destroy all your computer parts by having a PSU with too small capacity... I had to buy a new one when I bought my 8800GTS.

dude you should get an 450 NOW. i had 350 and it still destroid my pc as the 350 is recommered for an p4 at 2 ghz. you have more so it will take more psu.

Press ctrl alt & del, goto processes tab and post how many prcesses you are running, this will more than likely be your issue as i am guessing Windows will be eating up most of your RAM.

I usually have about 45 on start-up, but end the processes of non essential ones before each time I play and gets down to about 33.

When i got my x1950 pro graphics card. I got 550W PSU to go with it. Allthough the x1950 needs only 450W(i think it was). But because of the price, i tought why not...

New PSU can't do any harm to your pc...

Im just bit amazed about the 45 startup programs... How long does it take for you to boot up your PC?

I had 43 programs before when my PC was idling... And after i installed Kaspersky Interne t Security, it dropped to around 27..

My PC came with an 8600GT and a 300W PSU, and everything worked fine. When I upgraded to a 9600GT, I also upgraded to a 600W PSU even though the 9600GT only requires 400W.

It's always better to be on the safe side.

I actually had about 66 processes on start-up, but reduced them in the registry...lol. It still loads up really quick actually.

Is it hard to replace the psu for a complete n00b like me?

I usually use Msconfig(type it into 'run' and you'll see what i mean) to take out all the no need programs from the startup...

Replacing PSU, it's not that difficult... Basically all you need to remember is to put the new wires to the same spots where you took out the old ones.

If you can't remember all the spots where the wires go, you can take pic or two of your pc when the case is opened. Or use pen and paper. Everytime you pull out a wire, note it down..

I used the pen and paped method for the first time i changed PSU...

And if you want some "true" guides. Just google "replacing PSU"(for example). There is lot of guides with pics and good instructions...
