Technically it is their server to do with as they please, and people joining should abide by their rules.
For example in BF2 some servers allow baserape, some dont. It is still an aspect of the game that the managers of the servers decide upon.

      I accidentally voted for yes...

I actually don't think its much of an issue, though I use both features I would have no problem changing it around if it was the wishes of the server administrator. Its not as if I rely heavily on them to enjoy multiplayer. Theres enough fun features in CoD4 to go around.:p

The stats on CoD4 compaired to BF2 and Bf2142 are a joke... we run 3 Cod4 servers and dont restrict any weapons/perks but if we wanted to we would, as there are no rules from IW on how to run your server then who ever pays for their servers can put whatever rule they want.. you dont like it go somewhere else.. or dig into your own pocket and pay for your own server then you can do whatever you want on it..

I don't think the ranking system is very important in the big picture of things, since the game is designed to rank-up easily, so I don't see having these changes as an issue. As others said, there are no "official" servers and global rankings that demand a more level playing field (which I don't think is a good idea at its core for the health of the game overall anyway).

And there are quite a few people out there who would like to see some things changed (ie. the big issues like Martyrdom, higher Helo and Airstrike requirements, etc), but still have their server ranked to at least have a better chance to attract players and traffic...a lot of players have their filters set to "no" for mods and such.

I have no problem with "server rules", as long as they're spelled out (ie. message-of-the-day text) and the clan/server admin isn't a jerk about it, kicking people without warning.

The problem with battlefield 2's ranking system was that you can search ranked or unranked. PLUS, points seem to matter more in that game.

Rankings in COD4 are more user based (after all, they are saved on your computer). You can hit level 55 pretty quickly and then no one will care. I would rather play a game that is slightly modified from the original to keep it fresh now and then, than to keep playing the same game over and over getting points that ultimately go no where in life.

As people have pointed out, it doesn't really matter if it's ranked or not. If a server is going to restrict perks (personally I'd never join a server like this), the least they can do is take the perk/weapon/etc out instead of making a rule that will lead to kicking players pointlessly. It's stupid and asking for trouble.

In a game where ranks actually meant something (ie. BF2, 2142) I would argree with you 200%.

In CoD4, it's incredibly easy to max out your rank which is another way of saying "if everyone is special then nobody is." So for me, I say let them do what they want to do b/c it really makes no difference. There's no leaderboard and no central stats so this kind of behavior doesn't skew the rankings in their favor.

I was in a server last night (actually, they run two of them) and it had so many rules I was flabbergasted!

Things like martyrdom/last stand are no-brainers. No Grenade Launcher...not so bad. No bunnyhopping, that's cool. But things like "no grenade cooking"? No run-and-gun? There's even a rule that stated that rules 2, 5, 6, 7, and 9 don't apply on Shipment. I mean when you have rules that exclude rules and the excluded rules are that many, you've got some issues.

That server is just way out of hand and it's like you have to take a pop quiz to play there. The only thing I think you CAN do is run from place to place and fire your weapon if you're not moving. I think that's still allowed. Until they can't shoot you fast enough and then they'll take away your right to actually pull the trigger!

Going through the server list, I occasionally come across servers that have "No Marty/Toob" written on the end. On joining these servers there are clear messages that anyone using Marty or Toob will be kicked. This is never an issue for me as I use neither.

Okay, they pay for their server and they're free to apply their own rules. But I think that they should be unranked.
like you said they pay for their server and they're free to apply their own rules.

I voted yes. I cant stand marty and/or last stand but choosing to run a ranked server means I have no choice in the matter.

I see a lot of people saying that "rank" doesnt matter in COD4. If that was the case then most servers with restrictive rules would remove what ever they are complaining about. But seeing that doing so means there server becomes unranked they opt not to.

Obviously the ranking system means a lot more than most are claiming.

I think what most people here are trying to say is that rank shouldn't matter, because stats aren't kept globally. Unfortunately, with so many new players still joining the default ranked servers, people wanting to play on the same servers to pwn them, and the hassle of some custom servers, ranked servers are still more easily able to attract traffic. This is why some groups are keeping their servers ranked, but putting in (often too many) rules about what you can and can't do.

It's too bad there is a separation between ranked and unranked servers.
