They removed the full auto capability from the M14. It's only available in semi. Discovery aren't always that reliable when it comes to weapons.

It was simply too heavy in recoil to be a good full auto weapon. They tried to rememdy this with the M14A1, SAW style weapon.
However, the M14 displayed an erratic dispersion pattern, excessive recoil, and muzzle climb when fired as an automatic rifle.
M14A1. The Army designed the model M14A1 to overcome these problems, but it was too light to become a truly successful replacement for the M1918 series BAR, and production was halted in 1963. The M14A1 featured a full pistol grip and a folding forward hand grip
The selective fire capability was mostly useless, since the M14 was way too light for powerful cartridge it fired, and climbed excessively when fired in bursts. In fact, most of the M14s were issued to troops with fire selectors locked to semi-automatic mode, to avoid useless waste of ammunition in automatic fire.
    Global security and world.guns.ru

While they didn't remove the mechanics inside the gun that allowed full auto fire, they simply prevented the selector switch being able to move into the "auto" position. So technically it was capable of 700+rpm, but you couldn't select it on the weapon. This is one of the reasons M14's weren't sold to civilians after they were replaced in the military.

PS, the only weapon that would benifit from the semi auto setting is the M16. The others? just click once.

click once turns into bursts very very easily. at least for me, consecutive quick clicks throw off my concentration on the target. i end up bursting every time. and with some of the super high rate of fire guns, those quick clicks better be real quick. as soon as i got the g3 and m14, i found that my consecutive aimed shots became a lot easier to deliver. so your going to say, why don't i just use those guns right? that kinda throws off the rank balance for me doesn't it.

so ya, you are the top dog, you can accurately deliver single shots on an automatic. i am just a whiner that wants the game to be easier for me. whatever, i really don't care about all that. i just think this would be a better game with a fire rate selector and that it would not throw off the balance in any way.

Think of it this way, if theres no use for Single Shot in COD4, then why add in the feature? Consider this, if a target is running at a perpendicular angle, and youre in sighted view, your shots will hit the target. So why plink, when youve got a lazer hose? Im not a top dog and youre not a whiner, but start thinking "functionability". Instead of asking for a change, adapt your trigger finger, or go for my advice. Take G3, take an auto shot macro, and youve got a G3 battle rifle with a "selector switch". You can even get creative and add a 3 round burst option.

There IS a use for single shot in cod4, just obviously not by you.

why plink rather than laser hose? Oh i don't know, so i can have accurate kill shots on multiple enemy, conserve my ammo, give away my position less, actually see anything what so ever through the head shake and recoil, excedra.

As for macros, i suppose ill do it if i have to, but i frown upon cheating, and i especially wouldn't use it to make a semi automatic gun fire automatic.

Heres my question to you, why in the world would you be against a change like this. I can understand you not caring because it doesn't bother you as it is. But you must have some kind of alterer motive for your opposition. I wonder what that might be.

macros are not technically "cheating" its "exploiting"

There is a reason why some guns are more powerful, but lack auto fire, or vice versa. It is called BALANCE. G3 is good long range and even medium range, but it struggles at close range. Give it auto fire, like in single player, and you have a unforeseen problems that could arise in multi player. Give the m16 single shot, then there will be no point in the G3, etc.

Also, introducing a fire select button will just make things even more confusing. So you picked up an m4, you hold down the fire button and only a shot comes out-- the enemy turns around and kills you. See the unnecessary steps you have to think and go through? Hell, its hard enough distinguishing from picking up an m4 and a m16, you think you have an automatic weapon and suddenly you are stuck trying to auto fire an m16. Consider trying to juggle through modes right from get go and remembering what mode you are in while dealing with enemies popping out at you. Obviously they will have to add a "timer" to do the switch as well, so you will die trying to switch your gun back and forth too.

Face it, the game is finished, everyone has adapted to all the weapons, etc. A change like this will literally make everyone reconsider every weapon, and possibly even uncover that "ultimate" gun that is versatile in any situation. There is literally no point to force this upon everyone.

No, I don't know what Battlefield 2 is. If I recall, it sounds like a game that released too many patches that completely changed the way air combat and ground combat originally was like in the original release-- making everyone re-adapt to a new style of gameplay every single patch.

It's not complicated, its annoying. Just learn to use the guns as is and learn how to burst fire. If you want to shoot a single bullet, switch to a gun that has single fire capability.

BF2 is also a wide open area, where it takes more bullets to take someone down than in COD4. They are not the same settings, completely different games. If you compare CS or even previous COD games to COD4, then it would make more sense.

and why would reconsidering weapons be bad? there is not a best gun for ever situation if they all perform differently, which they already do. what i am talking about is in player preference. with an extremely light touch you can already accomplish single shots, so how is this any different?

im thinking your the kind of player that likes to exploit obvious game flaws and gets upset when those flaws are fixed.

My point is that you have a small number or letter in the lower that indicates what fire mode you are in. 1 = single shot, 3 = 3 round burst A = Full auto. Can be be any less complicated? Coz even a 5 year old child can figure that out

from listening to keyelite i think i figured out why people are so aprehensive about this. they want to pickup a weapon and immediately know its automacy. what if they did it so the fire mode setting always reverts to default when dropped. how bout that?

Well, you fix major problems in the beginning of game releases. Thats how I see it, give someone something they are getting used to, such as helicopters in bf2, then suddenly have to relearn how to evade missiles. Thats a critical part of flying, you should learn that when the game is first released, not a couple random months later. Same case applies here. And to be honest, I don't like any patch that changes the core gameplay around a lot. I'm all for patches to fix bugs, or small issues. What IW has been doing so far has been fine.

How is not having a selective fire button a "game flaw" that can be exploited? How is using an M16 for long range, or using an m4 for medium/close a game flaw? This isn't just me, its everyone-- we are accustomed to habit.

I understand what you are saying, It could possibly work, but you have to look at all the side effects of such a feature. Will guns become unbalanced? Is there a reason why they did not include this feature? They probibly considered it, but scrapped it for certain reasons. If you really want to know why they don't have that feature in this game, hit up the community manager for IW.
