What the **** are you guys talking about lol
would you consider portal 4-D?

ok, if the guy from Half-Life 2 was in here who
[spoil=ending of HL2]took you away as soon as the reactor blew and warped you 2 his "space"...or whatever[/spoil]
...then 4-D?Comment

I actually learned about that during a physics discussion with a good friend of mine (lol what friends I keep) who is seriously into the theoretical sciences. Essentially, you consider time to be an omnipresent dimension which exists outside of all spatial dimensions. Exactly what it is numbered is unimportant, outside the fact that it is not classified as a spatial dimension.Originally posted by Wikipedia[Time]can be considered as the 0th dimension, and all positive-numbered dimensions spatial.Comment

what was the actual wikipedia thing though...? as i see the "[" "]"I actually learned about that during a physics discussion with a good friend of mine (lol what friends I keep) who is seriously into the theoretical sciences. for all we know it could be...

Quoted for context. I had heard about this prior to looking it up on Wikipedia (which is why I call time the n+1th dimension).Originally posted by Wikipedia; full contextWhen a reference is used to four-dimensional coordinates, it is likely that what is referred to is the three spatial dimensions plus a time-line. If 4 (or more) spatial dimensions are referred to, this should be stated at the outset, to avoid confusion with the more common notion that time is the Einsteinian fourth dimension.
If time is considered as the "fourth dimension", the additional fourth spatial dimension would be referred to as the fifth dimension. Alternatively, time can be considered as the 0th dimension, and all positive-numbered dimensions spatial.Comment

lawls why did you need backet's then???Originally posted by Webs961Quoted for context. I had heard about this prior to looking it up on Wikipedia (which is why I call time the n+1th dimension).
ok...so how about portal= 3rd dimension² (to the power of 2)
or, in lamens terms, Half-Life² dimensionComment

Well, I mean like, whatever other dimensions are discovered (as a result of, say, string theory), would time would be added on to the end (So if the discover 2 extra dimensions, they would be recognized as the 4th & 5th, while time would become the 6th)? Or would it just be recognized as the forth, and any other dimension after that the fifth?
Edit: Ok I just saw Webs' argument that time is the 0th dimension, so I guess that answers my question. Really that'd make it the n-n dimension, huh? :pComment

I don't think the dimensions are "ordered" as such so talking about the first or last dimension doesn't make much sense.
The interesting thing about time as a dimension is that you can not move in any of the three dimensions without moving in time too.
But I like the idea of 4D portals. When you exit the portal you will see yourself just having created it, and be able to follow yourself around until your "first" self enters the portal.
Should be possible too, the game just needs to record your actions like Battle Recorder and other tools.Comment

but now you are assuming that the 4th dimension IS time, which seems to be a bit of a debate among some members of the TGN community.Originally posted by VrekiI don't think the dimensions are "ordered" as such so talking about the first or last dimension doesn't make much sense.
