Ive noticed that video drivers make some big changes as well.

I have an AGP 7900 GT and I get some good shine on weapons, not as good as everyone elses here, but I noticed when I updated the driver recently, it improved quite a bit.

Hmm, I'm downloading the latest driver updates. Maybe that'll help. I'll let you guys know in a minute

EDIT: Well apart from taking a long *** time to install it did absolutely nothing :/

Well Ferali, at least you tried. New drivers do tend to help out overall.

One other thing is it took a few loads on the game before a message came up stating "Something changed, would you like CoD4 to adjust for it" or something to that affect, then it made it look better.

Ummm, no, it shouldnt ask about safe mode, its when you are starting the game up.

It sounds like something else is going on in your system. You may run defrag/scandisk on your hard drive to clean it up some.

Okay, I figured it out. It certainly IS the Shader Model.

                In console type /seta r_rendererPreference 1
                Restart the game

Congrats, you're now using SM3 and should be shiny.

Proof: Those with shiny, enter the same thing 0 at the end, restart, see if it shines. It wont, your on SM2 now.

I told you how to confirm it, go do it yourself.

If your GFX card doesn't support SM3 maybe it still wont work, but for new cards not shiny, it will.

im not saying it wont work but i have heard so many "fixes" in this thread that work for very few and not others, i wanted to make sure it works for everyone before i go and start messing around in console.

No need to be afraid...you can't "break" the game with that console command. The console also has an automatic "complete" feature that helps you find the command you want, then shows you the options available for it. In fact, you SHOULD play around with it to get comfortable and familiar with it! :)

I just tried it myself...the command didn't seem to take effect while in-game. When I changed it in the config file, however, then started the game and took screenies, I could see a difference in "shine". My card is a Radeon X1950XT 256MB.

Just be aware that you will see a frame-rate hit for enabling Shader Model 3.0 instead of 2.0 (about 15 fps for me on 1024x768). For people on mid-range cards, the eye candy is probably not worth it.

It won't automatically change, you must restart your game.

I just know, for me, I had no shiny, I turned on Specular Map, I had shiny, I set to SM2 for better FPS, I lost shiny, I set back to SM3, shiny came back.
