I was going to change my name, but it doesn't fit with the clan tags, and I can't have the proper green tags, blue name... Clayboy_Bunny is just such an epic name!

I cant even fit ReaperOfsouls in without my clan tags.

Change it in the console or in your .cfg file. "ReaperOfsouls" is only 13 characters, and you should be able to get it to work that way. I think the name entry field in MP only allows 12 or so.

Can someone share with us how to change our names in the config file? I've seen this advice countless times, but I'm unsure as to the details and a search for it has resulted in no answers.

Thanks for your assistance and patience with us noobs. :salute:

Could I squeeze my clan tags in as well?

I assume in the COD 4 folder/players/profiles/(your name)/config_mp.cfg. Look for "seta name"? I haven't tried this yet so I suggest you back up the file before modifying it.

                Pretty much what GrossK posted...

                1) navigate to your Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\<your name here> folder
                2) open the config_mp.cfg file using Notepad or Wordpad
                3) look for the seta name "_________" entry, and add your name (including symbols/brackets/etc) in between the "" marks.
                4) save and exit

If it's too long, it'll just be cut off on-screen. But this should let you squeeze in a few more characters which might make shortening your name easier.

Again, several people have mentioned this to IW, so they're discussing it on their end.

Thanks for the tips. The longer name seems to appear only in the local stats in Ranks and Challenges.

As opposed to in-game scoreboards, you mean? What is the exact name you're trying to put in and what actually shows up on-screen?

Yeah, the only place I can see my whole clantag and playername is on the in-game scoreboard.

I've been playing as "[TRashED]SONIC", but I really want my whole name of "[TRashED]SonicPixel". What I see is only "[TRashED]SonicP". So, it appears that max length is 15 characters.

My clan also has a short form of [gT], but I like the full tag best as it's been in use since 1997 and the short form only came about because of some EA games.

I have 21 Characters in my name including tag and colour codes, in the score board it shows me as I want to be seen, only place my name isn't displayed as I want it to be really is on websites.

I used the console to set my name.

I haven't totally tested it, but I think it may be length-based, instead of character based. Meaning that capital letters (eg. "M") take up more width than lower case (eg. "e"). Some people may be able to get 20 or so characters, others might get less, but the overall length of the name on the screen may be the same.

But, just for giggles, you can try it via the in-game console too. Open the console with ~, then type:

                          /name _____________

and see if that gets you any more characters/length.

I saw a guy yesterday when I was playing Pipeline, he had like a 18 character name.

^1FIBUA^3=^1R^8epulse ~ isn't exactly on the thin side of thing . The command console is the better option IMO, as you wont get halfway through the name and realise there isn't enough room and you don't go editing the config files:).

I have noticed the same thing in other games. My name has lots of lower case letter I'll have to give it a whirl.
