Huh, I think we've just found another reason for soloing!

"I have to solo, otherwise we'll all lag!"

Sometimes, when I switch to the TV missiles, I automatically drop to <15 FPS.

I have no idea why, and it doesn't happen all of the time...

          Re: Helicopter Gunner Lag

It lags for me on public servers when trying to hit the enemy Helo, but I've heard of conflicting info on where you should be aiming the missile. Some say lead the target and others say aim for the back.

After watching the Duck & Cover footage, he gets lots of helo kills without the enemy Helo even being in view when the kills register???
I suppose it varies from PC/Server to PC/server.

It's just frustrating as a gunner because it makes you look like a complete numpty to the pilot when you don't hit anything, yet you know you could castrate a gnat from 300m if you were playing in SP.

Anyone want to add their opinion on where is best to aim for when gunning, because straight at the thing doesn't work for me unless he is hovvering!

          :hmm:

Have you ever understood the concept of 'ping'? It's the time it takes the server to register the data you send and relay it back to you. Unless you have a 1 ping, you will have to aim for hitboxes, not choppers. Hitboxes lag behind helis. They are never really "moved" or "closed" as some people might say during certain dodges, the hitboxes are always in the same orientation in relation to the chopper. However, the distance a hitbox is from the chopper has to do with the type of dodge or the speed of the chopper.

If you were to shoot at somebody doing a barrel roll falling from the sky at 350km/hr, you have to shoot above the heli.

If you were to shoot at somebody doing a slide at 350km/hr parallel to the ground, you have to aim behind the chopper.

There are helicopter movies EVERYWHERE on youtube. If you want to learn how to gun, start watching videos and continue gunning. Nothing will make you better except practice.

Yeah, I understand ping & latency, but TBH, I've never really looked into the mechanics of BF2 'Hitboxes'.

Now you have mentioned it though, I've just had a brief surf around about them and even came across that YouTube video showing you how to change your Interpolation settings from the game console. Interesting stuff.

It just means some poor pilot is gonna get me experimenting in the gunners seat (again) while he tries to rack up his stats!

                  Re: Helicopter Gunner Lag

Not to knock (that much) on you Cynic, but ping and network latency has little to do with the hitboxes being off the mark. Theres a thing called "lagshooting" which means that you basically aim ahead of the target in anticipation of its future location depending on the ping, AKA time it would take for a target to reach a certain spot. For example, I play with a 150 ms ping, which means that I have to aim ahead at a target where it would be in 150 ms. In terms of BF2, I aim 2 heads ahead of the running infantry. Thats ping, latency and lagshooting.

camperstrike and some people with more nuts in their heads have explained this TV missile bingobango in detail and it has to do with BF2 as a game and not network latency. To sum it up for the mortals, its the games fault. I just tell people to imagine theres an invisible chopper shadowing the chopper you see, just apply "negative lagshooting".

Sorry, was AFTK for a while. Thanks for the offer. I don't have Xfire but It looks like a neat bit of software so will have to install that.

I can't make it on just now, but I'll certainly give you a shout should I be in need of a willing pilot to ferry me around whilst I practice missing the target on purpose in my quest for the invisible 'hitbox'.

Well obviously it's ****ty coding. The amount of lag you have does have quite a bit to do with how far off the hitboxes are. I can definitely tell a difference gunning in a server where I have 30 ping and 140 ping, because the hitboxes on some dodges go from 5 feet away from the chopper to 15 feet away from the chopper. But everything in BF2 does indeed have lagging hitboxes.

PS: When you have more hours in the gunner seat (1000+), have more kills than me (35,000+ spread across my accounts, probably another 10,000 to 15,000 in unranked match play), do better in competitive play than me (20-0 in all TWL 2v2s I've been in, 4-0 in CAL 8v8s in season 6 as a gunner) and are more effective in the heli than me, you can tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.

Please tell me what has your sub par perfomance* have anything to do with technical knowledge on how the gears turn? Because Im dieing to know how a helicopter gunner can work his way up in skill ladder to be an exceptional IT specialist specialising in network solutions and troubleshooting?

Unless the universal "lagging hitboxes" term shows just how educated you are on the subject, I suggest you take your seat in the back row and let people who actually know sh!t to do the talking.

Have you ever understood the concept of 'ping'?
That was your rather sarcastical question, and the concept of ping and latency has always been pretty clear. The higher the ping, the more you need to lead to compensate for the time it takes the data to transfer. The problem with hitboxes goes far beyond that logic, which means theres a different kind of problem.

So please, take your stats of nolifing and find a hobby, something that has to do with chasing *** instead of hands. Thanks for trying. Note that I said I didnt want to knock, just to correct.

anyways I dont think Ive had that problem before but my game starts laggin bad after I play for a long time

like last night, I dont think my FPS was going over 25 for the whole round, still owned, you know how we do

I didnt think fps had much to do with it, but I uncapped mine and I was getting fps of 180-200 today on Dragon Valley and I went 111-20 soloing.....well part of that was noobs in the other choppers as I wasnt killed one time by another chopper, they were all deaths by J10, I was also pinging between 15-19 so I guess I had everything going for me
