  • Ping help

Right, i did a 9mb speed test on my internet and i got..

Your line speed is 1.18 Mbps (1176 kbps).
    Your download speed is 147 KB/s (0.14 MB/s).

I know absolutely nothing about internet speed and such but i know at least i am connected to broadband. My graphics card is an Nvidia geforce 7300 gs supporting 256/512 mb. Now i do have like 3 other computers connected to the same network. I get excessively high pings, such as like 350 - 500. I have the graphics settings on low too. Whats the problem, is it the fact that the other computers are all linked up? Even if only 2 computers are in use i seem to get the high pings. I wouldn't usually care but basically just get kicked from just about every server. If there is a way, whats the best way to fix this or improve this? Thanks for reading! Excuse my noobyness.

A firewall issue, no doubt. Someone smarter than I should be able to help you out.

      Re: Ping help

I do have a firewall on, i have heard that could be the problem. The trouble is, will it become REALLY VULNERABLE to viruses and such?

        Re: Ping help

Not if you use decent anti virus. I run my computer without windows firewall and my router firewall is pretty much non existent.

Download AVG and aslong as you're not stupid about what you download you'll be fine.

            Re: Ping help

It's definitely the other computers on the network that are causing the problem IMO. All they need to do is have msn running, or watch youtube and your ping reaches the levels you said.
Try playing when all other computers are turned off, and if you still have high pings then we know the problem is somewhere else, but I doubt it.
If you have 1.18mb speed, divide it by 4 and you get 294kb per computer which is not enough to play bf2 online!!!

              Re: Ping help

Thanks alot dudes, yeah i turned off the fire wall, ping seemed to hit around 300 still. I do reckon its the other computers. We never usually have 4 online at 1 time but on the off occasion we do. I play counterstrike and i can tell if someone logs onto msn or myspace because my ping skyrockets. The game is still easily playable just wondering if i could get it lower. Also guys sometimes i get the message : there is a problem with your connection, it just randomly pops up. Whats that all about? Anyway thanks for all your input guys, i really appreciate it.

                Re: Ping help

the problem with your connection message appears for a number of reasons but in your case I suspect because your ping is too high.

                  Re: Ping help

Well my ping sometimes sits at about 172, it was there for a while and there was like 20 people with a ping above mine. What else can i do to get rid of this problem? its annoying when im flying or anything because it makes me crash. Also is there some sort of way, to get off the computers all linked to t he network but still use the same internet connection? Thanks dudes

                      Re: Ping help

Mcbeef: turn off all other computers that share your internet connection.
Play on a server near you.
Do you still get a high ping?

                        Re: Ping help

Well to be honest i dont know where the servers are haha, where does it say what country their from? Anyway last night it was just 1 other computer my computer went down to like 140.

The weird thing here is guys, i get absolutely no lag. The frame rate is fine, its movining and not stalling but then like once a minute or once every two minutes it just says "There if a problem with your connection" and then keeps running fine, like at a very smooth pace. I'll try a local server but i don't know if thats whats going on. Now i seem to see alot of people with a ping over 150. I don't mind the ping it's just these error messages that keep annoying me and i dont understand them because the game runs fine.

guys, i found a guy who gets a ping of 30 and has the same probs as me, so i dont think its the ping causing this error.

It took me a while to find this solution to the problem, and it annoyed the crap out of me, so I'm posting it in the first 5 forum links for it in google:

I got rid of the "Problem with your connection" problem by disabling VOIP in the options. Apparently, EAX can also cause it sometimes, but in my case it was just the VOIP. Hope this solves the problem.

What does this mean? and if so how do i do it? Thanks alot guys

                          Re: Ping help

Ok: you yet have to try with all other computers turned off before we can put this one to sleep, so try that and post back with the result!!!!!!!!

                              Re: Ping help

Ah that's interesting, so we know now that the problem isn't due to sharing your internet connection.
Do you play on servers near you? if you live in the US do not play on servers in Europe, etc.
Do you use a wireless connection?
