One thing I've found that works for me with programs that use a CD key is to email them to multiple web based email accounts.

I have my BF2, SF, SimCity 4, Windows XP, Office XP, etc. keys in my Yahoo and Gmail accounts so if I ever lose a key for some reason, I have multiple resources from which to gather the needed keys.

Never promoted piracy. I said use a bogus CD key, then use the key you legally purchased.
