A much simpler solution is to write the CD Key on the disk using a Sharpie.

If your bf2 is working now, make sure to register with EA using the link in your [start > programs > bf2]. then you will be able to recover it later on.

Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
Select Run.
Type regedit into the available text field and press OK.
Click the plus (+) sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus (+) sign next to Software.
Click the plus (+) sign next to Electronic Arts.
Click the plus (+) sign next to EA Games.
Click the plus (+) sign next to Battlefield 2.
Click on the ergc. On the right panel screen, double click on default.
You should see a code under Value Data.
After x9392 is you CD key. (eg. x9392DH34DF78WE35BV78AS69)
MAKE SURE NOT TO CHANGE ANY OF THE VALUES AND EXIT OUTComment

it shows encrypted on mine but when i ran through the register product i didn't have to type in the cd code, it showed the encrypted one in the field automatically and it accepted it when i used the one already there. maybe you can try that, register the encrypted code and then try to retrieve the unencrypted one from your EA link account.Comment

Just so all the new players know and get it right. Before you loose or need that CD Key take a magic marker and write it on the first CD. You will need to keep the first CD in your cd drive, under normal circumstances, to play the game so no one can see that number and it will be harder for it to get lost that way. You really should do that with all your games, software, that have a CD key.
I used the CD key I put on my CD to reinstall BF2 after the latest PunkBuster magic trick made my game unplayable. I think that the PB update was long over due and am happy they did the update but I didnt enjoy spending a large part of the day, yesterday, uninstalling, all of BF2, and reinstalling, all of BF2 and PB. It could have been much worse if I couldnt find that CD Key, though. So before you need the CD key take a sharpie, permanant magic marker, and write the CD key on your first CD. Did I mention CD Key enough times? Can you say Permanant magic marker? LOL. . . . . . .RedComment

Export that encrypted serial number, then run it through BF2's EA registration program, like Power said.
Wish I could make h4x, the amount of CD-keys you could collect from poor suckers who want to spam cars...Comment

if u once had the invalid cd key error and u did a quick fix, it wont be encrypted. u can delete the ecnrypeyed stuff in ur registry and put in ur real cd key (with x9392 in front) and itll work fineComment
