commanding and playing

Just mainly out of interest. Some of you have by now been playing BF2 since that game came out or have just bought the game and most will have seen commander playing whilst commanding on either infantry servers or with vehicles.

Do you think that a commander can do both jobs as well?

Do you think that commanding and playing tend to end up loosing?

Since some people are new I found I can not do both mainly as I am not that quick (my age you see) and when ask for a request I loose who asked for it. However, when sitting back in a safe place I can have better control of the map.

What your thoughts :salute:

Thanks

Re: commanding and playing

I don't care who you are, but if you command AND play at the same time, you cannot do as well as if you were only commanding. The time you use fighting could be used to spot enemies, so for that reason alone, its impossible to do your best as commander and fight at the same time. This doesn't mean that you can't do both and be successful at the same time though. If I command, I mainly just sit in a corner and focus on that. Depending on how good the team is though, they may not need the commander as much, so after I scan and deploy UAV/arty, Ill gun a few guys down. Once the assets are ready to be used again though, Ill find a corner and get back to commanding.

It all depends on how good your team is. If you are completely destroying the other side, the I say sure, let the commander on the battlefield. However, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES do I think commanders should be in ANY air vehicles. You cannot stay on the commander screen long enough to be useful when you have to pilot your vehicle. Ground vehicles are different because if you stop, your vehicle wont go crashing into the ground. Just make sure to stop in a safe place. Tanks on the other hand are different, because they may be better used with a person that is always engaging the enemy. I hate seeing a commander using a tank thats parked somewhere doing nothing.

So bottom line is, it depends on how good your team is, but you should never be in air vehicles.

You can protect important flags as commander such as airports @ dragon valley, wake island, kubra dam or tank/chopper flags on road to jalalabad, sharqi

There's no way you can command as effectively while you're also fighting.

but if it's a quiet server (< 10 people side) then I think you're probably more effective splitting your time between fighting & commanding... it's a matter of balance... My preference is to stick to guarding or capturing quiet flags, which are more forgiving of not paying attention for seconds at a time.

With a small force, having 1 person laying in a corner = greater % of the fighting force that's out of action.

i think if your commander you should just protect your assets, if your some great pilot that just needs to fly thats great, just don't command because some private as commander is doing better that a general not commanding and just flying around

I usally set up traps to defend flags with C4 when Im commander. On pub servers you can do abit of fighting and moving while your assets are recharging since most players wont follow your orders or listen to you over VoIP. I can do both jobs well. Vehicles are another story.

I tend to stick claymores at a flag, hide somewhere really sneaky and the provide commander support to the team and attempt to defend the flag too.

i would rather have the commanders defending quite flags then swimming way out to sea, i had a bad experience where the china commander swam as far away as he could at wake and the everyone died so it took forever to kill him, for somereason the usmc wouldn't use the scan?

Re: commanding and playing

I think it depends on your players, if you got a good team why risk it, sit back & let them rack up points for you, maybe get a enginneer & stay near your uav , but if your teams suks then guess its good to tryn to help some, i dont think you can fly & command effectively though, as a passenger in transport maybe.

someone wrote when your commanding & spot out a red dot its not visable to your team unless you zoom in mapp & click on themfrom zoom, i thought they were full of krap until i was on server with about 6 peep on each side, commander was drivin me nuts "enemy infantry spotted" but never on the mapp, he was facing the carrier on dragon valley so i knew it wasnt his own team, anyway got me to thinkin,so i broke out to command a little while later & i was spotting red dots & lookin at my mini when i closed my commander screen & the ones i spotted wasnt there, only the ones i zoomed in on & spotted.
guess im too nooby ya'll probably allready knew that yrs ago.

I can't wait to answer this again....

You volunteer to command. Do the fvckiing job.

If you need me to explain, then think of a soup kitchen as a metaphor. Yeah, mother fuker, a metaphor. If you can't think of a metaphor or don't know what is, then you don't have any bother concerning yourself with such a game, let alone a question such as the one posted.

Soup kitchen
You don't volunteer to eat all the soup (i.e. use the assets for personal gain).
You don't volunteer and not pass out soup (i.e. not use assets).
You don't volunteer and then spill soup on the floor (i.e. suck at commanding).
You don't volunteer and say the entire time, "I'm so awesome" (i.e. suck and decide to go rambo-style which earns you no more points than if you had just sat in a corner).

If you don't know what the **** you are volunteering to do, then don't ****ing volunteer.

And, no, one cannot do anything but command (i.e. see above).

BTW, how do I unlock guns? I want the L96 but I don't have anything except for BF2... What rank do I get it? Do I need to type in a code?

commanders are great tools for C4 traps though they can tell when someone is going to pass through a C4ed area from across the map they are perfect for defense. they can do some fighting but especially on a small team on a pub they need to carry there own weight.

I play commander a lot Simon, and I can do both quite well and I'm not much younger than you. In fact most of the time when I participate, we win, and when I just hide somewhere doing nothing but supporting my troops, we loose. It's all matter of experience. As a commander you have the advantage of knowing which flag needs to be defended and which oponent's flag can be taken because is undefended, and many times your team won't follow orders to take/defend flag. That's where you or I as a commander step in. Some servers have rules of the type "no fighting commander" but what are you supposed to do? Run away when they are shooting at you and not defend your flags? That rule is totally ridiculous. The only rule I agree with is "no flying commander", every other weapon and vehicle should be at your disposal, as long as you can multitask and don't stop supporting your troops. If you can't, maybe you should stick to the commander's map only, or just play something else.

p.s. for the record once again my fighting as a commander consists of simply defending a flag when your team refuses to, or taking isolated undefended flags. Other than that I don't actively fight like you would normally do like when you are a squad member or something.
