    EXACTLY!!!!!!!

Making the right decision is tough because some may not agree. BUT, they always have the option to leave. :)

Also you can be a great SL but if the people in your squad don't play as a team it won't matter. I enjoy when I'm a SL and see three people sqawning with me and fighting together and two across the map. I ask a couple of times for them to stay with the squad and if they don't respond I kick them. The other day I formed a squad on Karkand and was on the USMC side. I spawned and started to move towards suburbs. Two people joined the squad and spawned with me. I was with a few people not in a squad and by the team we got there we had a full squad and pushed our way across the map. It's tough to stop a full squad that plays/stays together.

Re: Do You Get Repeat Business As Sl?

To be a good SQL, you need to give the people in your squad what they need. To know what they need you need to have some experience in squadplay first.

The first and foremost- you need to be a spawnpoint in the best position possible. This game is about fun, and its not that fun if you dont get some action. As a squadleader, you need to quarantee that your squad gets into action whenever they die, with the best tactical situation there is. So when they spawn, then can do what they do best without having to walk 10 miles to action, or being mowed down by something they cant deal with.

Secondly- orders. You need to give the squad the most logical, simple, effective and followable orders as possible. When Im in a squad, I expect my SQL to know what hes doing, and even more, know what he wants from us. If I run a squad with people with some experience, the rest doesnt matter. I see a threat (tank/APC), check my squad member list, and ask for 2 AT troops. Upon closing in on a flag, I ask them to switch to Assault (or their most comfortable Anti Infantry kit) as soon as they get killed. All very simple, logical tasks.

Thirdly- Comms. Comms arent really important if you run a squad of experienced players [sic!]. Comms add to fun and somewhat to immersion. Effectively, only the SQL needs to talk, and he needs to say the bare minimum to explain the orders.

Lastly- victory. If the squad sees that what youre doing, is bringing them a step closer to victory, they will play with you. But victory comes only if you make sure your squad is in the right position, always ready to fight and most of all, always ready to flip the tables on the battlefield.

Fun, comfort, reliability, intel, victory = good SQL

No they dont. Spotting, UAV and skill take care of comms. If anything, comms are often a distraction as most people dont know what to say anyway.

            "enemy over there"

You can do it without comms but if none of the Squad leaders have comms and the other teams has squads using comms that team will win. Its alot quicker and more efficent to just talk and say what you see rather then press a button and select spotted. plus its easier to hear voice when it is coming from outside the game and not blending in with the game. If you think its a distraction then you need to learn to tune out unnecesary sounds when gaming.

Besides with the ingame comms (not voip) you are limited to saying a few things and you cant say things like...

              Im down
              I hear a chopper
I saw something pass by here
              The UAV shows this.......
              Artilery is coming in
He got me he is behind us with a shotgun

And other stuff the ingame comms do not allow you to tell your freinds where enemys are when you are dead or just say if the enemy passed by or is hanging around the area. Yes some of that stuff can just be observed by looking at the map but in a fire fight or intense battles people dont often pay attention to the map and focus on shooting down the enemy.

Most people I have been with know exactly what to say when we meet an enemy.

                No DF,
                Heres a simple equation

                Skill > Comms

Skill AND comms is better than Skill alone. But you know what? You can do it your way, I'll do it mine :)

You have pretty much declared that your way is the only way . Comms are distracting for infantry play in BF2. Skill is when you dont need comms. Teamwork can be done with spotting alone.

Doesn't hurt to have someone say "the badguy is on the eastern side of the building".

Otherwise, voip is good for AT co-ordination and tank squads.

I agree, it doesnt hurt. But playing in a squad where peoples skill exceed mine in heaps and bounds, the conversation and comms really do just fall down to regular chatter, at best. Thing is, the good players know the map by the heart, and spotting does the rest. The ones who go in first, use the best routes of attack, and the people who play off others, go for the flanks. Its as if it goes automatically. SQL just provides the tactically best starting position.

Couple this with comms and you have that much more of an advantage.

Dismiss comms as an insignificant tool and you will lose every time, when up against an equally skilled squad that IS using comms.

Comms are only an advantage if comms are being used as little as possible and as much as necessary. In a sense, using comms is an equally obtainable skill as game experience. Comms by itsself is not a magical win button, and when played with people who just use it to say "something", it serves as a severe disadvantage for good players.

Dismiss comms as an insignificant tool and you will lose every time, when up against an equally skilled squad that IS using comms.
What is equally skilled? How can you define it?

Comms are certainly not a key in BF2 pub play. It comes after your teammates, a good commander and the disadvantages of the opposing teams.

Give me a solid, good, competent jet pilot as a support, and you can have your comms. Guess who will have an upper hand? When were talking about a competent helo crew, its just game over for the squad with comms.

"Enemy on the east side of the building" or "Were going to attack ´that´ flag now" can easily be done with "Enemy infantry spotted" and an assaault marker. Peoples skill level will take care of the most. Logical thinking and playing off the leaders will take care of the rest.

Comms are fun, comms are immersive and comms can really help in certain vehicles (helicopter crew), but in squad level infantry play, comms are often overrated.
