Re: why havent played Bf2 much anymore.

the PS3's release date was dependant on where you live, it came out a few months ago over here.
and as for the game, not impressed. way too unrealistic. dont get me wrong, i love a good futuristic game (but not BF2142), but that just didnt appeal to me one bit. and my god, that has gotta be the worst designed aircraft ever. having thrusters on every side of the plane (if you can call it that). and belive me, after hitting a metal rail at speed you would not bounce back:laugh:

yeh take a look at Final Fantasy VIII, for PS1 i think. awesome game, at that time graphics just didnt matter, if that was released now, noone would take a 2nd glance.

Then a few games from each genre. Burnout 2 for example being my all time favourite cargame.
Too bad the PS3 has none of that right now. I've been patient for a long time now, and I deserve a decent game for my unjustifyably expensive Blu-ray player.

What the fvck, right? 3 worthy titles. Adding STALKER, which ranks with these 3 as "super awesome legendary" games. And thats it. Thats all PC has to offer.
I'm going to try to go in order based on age; but you'll get the general idea of what I'm trying to say in response to your statement.

      Prince of Persia
      Commander Keen II
      Space Quest III
      Might and Magic III
      Doom
      Sim City
      Civilization I
      Master of Orion
      Duke Nukem 3D
      Doom II
      Quake
Dragon's Gate (AOL based net MUD)
      Quake II
      Civilization II
      Master of Orion II
      Caeser II
      The Elder Scrolls I
      Heroes of Might and Magic
      Warcraft I

This is all before 1995 BTW. Each has sold more than 1 million copies. Dragon's Gate, had over 100,000 subscribers at one point, and I Know that I missed dozens in that list. This is just what I can name off of the top of my head.

I could very easily continue to name huge blockbuster games that have all came out on the PC, and let me tell you something. Each one of those games has either produced 100+ hours of entertainment; an enthralling storyline, or a revolutionizing style of gameplay.

This is in comparison to the piddly 40+ hours of entertainment that a console game brings, where it does nothing but ripoff the gameplay that were fresh and new on the PC a decade ago.

I mean, I loved Mario RPG, but it came out the same time that Warcraft I did. Warcraft I was simply too good to be true at the time of it's release, so Mario RPG got shelved. I never did beat it...

Playing racing games on a PC can be alleviated by using a racing-wheel controller. I rarely play racing games though, since they can rarely hold my attention for longer than 20 minutes at a time.

Anyhow your niche point is painfully biased in so many ways. PC's were never a niche, but a huge thriving market for just as long as console games. The only reason the Console Market has grown, is because it's more accessable to the common gamer.

More-so, I realize you're from an European country, and that your access to PC games is probably restricted, but it only 'seems' like the consoles have more great games. This is because there are not only more console game companies out there due to intense competition between console makers, but this is also because the games themselves are sadly inferior, and thus easier to make, which means they can make more of them.

      Compare Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on the computer, to the same version on the Xbox 360. Theres no comparison; the computer wins by so many levels. The graphics are crisper, theres less choppiness, you have access to more awesome downloadable content than the crap you can get on X-box Live. (Especially with Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul patch, which removes that annoying 'The monsters level with you' crap.}

You're playing the wrong games then. If you expected to cry at the storyline offered at BF2 and CS:S 1.6, then you only have yourself to blame.

There are countless wonderful storyline based RPG's and Adventure games on the PC right now. My personal suggestion would be to pick up the following:

      Gothic II
      Fallout II
      Spellforce II

They may feel non-linear, but if you stick with the mainstoryline for all three games, I guarantee some heart-tugging along the way. I'm currently loving every moment I'm spending on Elder Scrolls IV, but I haven't beaten it yet, so I can't really comment on the linear-storyline. So far, it's been excellent.

Indeed thats all that consoles have to offer.

Pretty graphics, a predictable lead-you-by-the-nose storyline, and a climax of action that peaks just as fast as it begins. Most women would call that a one-minute man.

Luckily for you, thats all you look for. I personally refuse to buy a game that I won't spend at least 100+ hours on. Thankfully, non-linear RPG's are my favorite games of all time, so I never go wrong with what I buy.

I still go back to play games like Might and Magic every now and then. It's a different game everytime I play it. Where as, the only fun that MGS 1 + 2 offer me is...

Why the hell would I want to play these games over again? Theres only so much fun that could be had, dragging a lifeless guard's body around. Especially when the linear storyline that you love so much has been played to death.

These games are called Dust-collectors, and sadly they're my favorite PS2 games.

PC games revolutionize the gaming industry. If the PC niche were to ever fade off, then gaming itself would slowly die a slow lingering death.

hmm..I wonder whats going on around here.
In my area, Philly/Jersey area some game stores have stopped selling PC games, mostly the gamestops. Guys there and my friends at EB games have told me those games just dont move and the lack of trade in value sucks since they get big revenue from that alone.

Also Ive never been able to trade in PC games...which is a high point for console gaming actually. Sure the turn over rate isnt great, but I got rid of some horrid Xmas I played for a month or 2. Sure 4 games for 1 new wasnt a great deal, but it was better then 4 crappy games.

        Warcraft I
All great games. I admit, but alot of them seem very PC based, more of a thinking mans list of games..were as console gaming is short to the point action. ALot of these tend to be a sit at a desk type stuff, along with the cliche FPS. In noway could I sit on my couch and play with 3 of my buddies and talk crap to each other..and pls dont compare it to Mics and headphones..no comparison to a mic and headphone match to a bunch of buddies with beer and Madden in the living room

Sorry no FPS has yet to move me or impress me, its always the same to me in some odd way just better graphics and new weapons etc... nothing that blew my mind like "wow to take and FPS and expand on it this way, sweet"
cept the BF series with mutiple **** to do and play with...which is why I like it.

Its true, slow start...just like the 360 had so to say. Trust me at launch and for the same few months the 360 boards sounded just like that. Right now I just spend my time playing RFOM online, MLB: Show Online, or Calling all Cars.
Thats really enough for me to be honest...thats far to many games to balance with still having an enjoyment for Bf2, a fulltime pain in the *** job, and a family. No more good old days of 8-10 hour days locked away playing FFVII:cry:

I cant for the life of me figure out how Im gonna justify to my wife buying Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Lair, Warhawk, GTA IV, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Little Big World, Drakes Uncharted, PSEYE and EYE of JUDGEMENT, Ratchet and Clank and few more...and just till Xmas..and thats 10 games Im betting are hits and get 8+ ratings all around
Even if I do get my way and she lets me buy all of them...How the F*** am I gonna play them all ? And to top that off what about HOME? I mean I wanna mess around too with that

So I can agree to much of what you say, some of it is a little different in my eyes, and many others problably..just like this whole console discussion..its just opinions.

I live south of philly and go to a bunch of gamestops/EB and they ALL sell PC games. So maybe it is just in S. Jeresy??? But I find that hard to believe. Then again why would you be lying, who knows?

All that I know is that the 5 or 6 stores I frequent all sell PC games. It doesn't seem logical to me that a company as big as GS/EB would limit certain stores. They would all be consistent.

Now, did you mean stores like walmart, target, which have console games, but as far as I know don't have PC games? I mean even best buy has a decent selection of PC games.

yeah a few of the gamestops dont sell PC games anymore (yeah just SJ), not all but Ive found a few in malls and strip mall stores around the area, maybe its the poorer malls and areas that cant stand to lose a dime or have inventory that doesnt move. Like I said I asked why and even talked to some EB games guys on why they would do it..I got the same answer "they just dont move as well".."no trade in value/resale".."small player base vs. console" etc...
Think its the reason you can find 2-3 yr old copies of PC games still on game store shelfs collecting dust...Ive seen the same BFV box on the shelf at a local gamestore for the last few years..The carboards kinda beat up and its worn, but theres ALOT of PC games like that at game stores.

Which is why I havent bought it, PS3 is a new fish in the waters and as with any console you need the developers to have some time to get the most out of the hardware. Looking at some of the games released for PS3 today Im saying "holy sh!t thats bad..." but then again, so were most games on PS2 aswell. Give it time, major titles are coming out soon and then you cant stop the avalanche. Right now there are 2 titles that would interest me and those are Motorstorm and Resistence (I bet youd have guessed them). But PS3 will be in my room when Gran Turismo, Ace Combat, RE, MGS are out aswell. And hopefully EAs greedy hands of evil allow the guys to create a decent Burnout game aswell. And if Twisted Metal was godly on PS2, its going to be orgazmic on PS3.

I'm going to try to go in order based on age; but you'll get the general idea of what I'm trying to say in response to your statement.
The list is so flawed its not even funny.

Prince of Persia - also available on NES, gamepad suited so much better mind you
Commander Keen II - Apply any Super Mario game and Keen is history. Wheres the story in Keen anyway?
Space Quest III - Havent played it, but it sounds like an RTS or RPG, which are only edible with a pound of PC.
Might and Magic III - RPG? Only edible on PC.
Doom - Also available on PS1, where it was better played with a controller.
Sim City - Strategy, what did I say about RTS and FPS?
Civilization I - Strategy ---//---, these are thinking mans games which require you to sit behind a computer alone and "work".
              Master of Orion - ?
              Duke Nukem 3D - FPS
Doom II - FPS, but I played it on PS1. Better on PS1.
              Quake - FPS
Dragon's Gate (AOL based net MUD)
              Quake II - FPS
              Civilization II - Strategy
Master of Orion II - RPG?
              Caeser II - ?
The Elder Scrolls I - RPG
Heroes of Might and Magic - Strategy
Warcraft I - RTS (and oh my did I love this game)
Some of these titles I was playing parallel with my NES and PS1. For example all the strats that I remember from this list. But youve effectively proven my point. Outside its niche, PC cannot compete with the consoles, and vice versa. Thanks for going to such lenghts to once again prove it.

This is all before 1995 BTW. Each has sold more than 1 million copies.
Im pretty sure a console fanboy would find some stats on the major selling console title for an all out war. But your argument is pointless as you described the games that are only playable on the PC.

I could very easily continue to name huge blockbuster games that have all came out on the PC, and let me tell you something. Each one of those games has either produced 100+ hours of entertainment; an enthralling storyline, or a revolutionizing style of gameplay.
You got 2 out of 3. I hardly see the thrill in Dooms storyline where it was given to you in a damn game manual (LOLz?!).

This is in comparison to the piddly 40+ hours of entertainment that a console game brings, where it does nothing but ripoff the gameplay that were fresh and new on the PC a decade ago.
No game in the WORLD of PC could ever get close to the living room action we had 4 years ago (friends all grown up, sadly, we dont game together anymore like we used to). I borrowed a projector from my schools principal, took out my PS2. Set my old bedsheet on the wall. Got out some whiskey, beer, snacks and played games like WRC2, Ready to Rumble, Twisted Metal Black / 4 and then some olympics aswell. By the way, when we were kids we sat and played "Track and Field" on NES aswell. And for example WRC2 has given me at least 200+ game hours alone, with Twisted Metal twice as much, at least. Youre describing a story game like MGS that gives a total of 30-50 hours to complete it once on all difficulties and then some bonus games aswell. But you need to remember that those games are mostly considered to be interactive movies.

I mean, I loved Mario RPG, but it came out the same time that Warcraft I did. Warcraft I was simply too good to be true at the time of it's release, so Mario RPG got shelved. I never did beat it...
Mario is sh!t. It was only good on NES and even then the standard Super Mario was bad.

Playing racing games on a PC can be alleviated by using a racing-wheel controller. I rarely play racing games though, since they can rarely hold my attention for longer than 20 minutes at a time.
Thats because youre playing them on PC, and they are mostly console ports. I can name a few titles off my head such as Flatout or GT, but they both get mauled with titles like Gran Turismo, CMR, WRC. Then theres this demolition derby game series I remember playing and of course Twisted Metal. And Im the kind of guy who sticks to the very few good ones as Ive probably left an impression. Well, there are more console games on my shelf than PC game, with a 10:1 ratio.

Anyhow your niche point is painfully biased in so many ways. PC's were never a niche, but a huge thriving market for just as long as console games. The only reason the Console Market has grown, is because it's more accessable to the common gamer.
And your list was not? PC market may be the SPEARHEADING market, but neer a mainstream one. And I didnt touch the market issue. I tried to point out that the most popular PC games are only popular because they represent a genre that cannot be played on a console. Cannot = just not suitable.

More-so, I realize you're from an European country, and that your access to PC games is probably restricted, but it only 'seems' like the consoles have more great games.
LOL. Enlightment. I would estimate there are more people in Euro playing PCs to consoles than in the US.

              Compare Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on the computer, to the same version on the Xbox 360. Theres no comparison; the computer wins by so many levels. The graphics are crisper, theres less choppiness, you have access to more awesome downloadable content than the crap you can get on X-box Live. (Especially with Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul patch, which removes that annoying 'The monsters level with you' crap.}
Ugh, ports. Please stay away from the subject. Worst victim to date is R6:Vegas.

You're playing the wrong games then. If you expected to cry at the storyline offered at BF2 and CS:S 1.6, then you only have yourself to blame.
Where did I say I played BF2 and CS for the "story"?

There are countless wonderful storyline based RPG's and Adventure games on the PC right now. My personal suggestion would be to pick up the following:

              Gothic II
              Fallout II
              Spellforce II
I dont play RPG. Ive played Oblivion and its just not a console game. It requires your own time, a mouse, a KB and your own corner to be focused on the game with. Consoles offer something different.

Pretty graphics, a predictable lead-you-by-the-nose storyline, and a climax of action that peaks just as fast as it begins. Most women would call that a one-minute man.
And you call Oblivion the gold of all storyline based games? Sounds like a 300 pound man with an erection problem to me. The only real reason why for example Oblivion isnt predictable, is because youre doing so much something else that the pieces of the story fall away and you forget about it. And then theres the end climax and you hear yourself say. Oh yeah, that one! Fin. Boring? Indeed. Whereas my last story driven game on consoles, Devil May Cry 3, had to offer some great action. TONS of immersion (what a good story brings), and a story that is almost legendary.

Luckily for you, thats all you look for. I personally refuse to buy a game that I won't spend at least 100+ hours on. Thankfully, non-linear RPG's are my favorite games of all time, so I never go wrong with what I buy.
Which is why Im not so linear. Story games because I enjoy a great story. Rallye games for that kind of fun. Arkade car games for this kind of fun. And well, you get the picture. Consoles replayablity comes from different aspects than the games on PC. And if you care to think, PC games replayablity comes from multiplayer only.

I still go back to play games like Might and Magic every now and then. It's a different game everytime I play it. Where as, the only fun that MGS 1 + 2 offer me is...
Story, my dear friend. MGS storyline is the gem of modern art. Its by far, undeniably, the best story ever thought out. Playing the story through is just too damn good. Ive played each title 2-3 times because thats all I need. But as a comparision- who would buy a movie DVD if they need to watch it only once? You see, MGS is like an interactive book or movie. You need to "watch" it once. But those 10-20 hours are well worth the money.

These games are called Dust-collectors, and sadly they're my favorite PS2 games.
              More like collectors items.

Shall I finish the list of great PC games that're exclusive to the PC? I can guarantee that my list will go deep into the hundreds. Rare gems you say...
Yes, go on and finish the list you started. So far there are either nonexistant or uninspiring stories in them or they are either FPS or strats games.

PC games revolutionize the gaming industry. If the PC niche were to ever fade off, then gaming itself would slowly die a slow lingering death.
Its never going to die if it offers such gems as multiplayer action and great RTS, and now... MMORPG.

The games in bold have some of the best and most memorable story lines for me personally, and I would highly recommend these games to anybody interested.

The PC niche as you call it... has always offered games with a strong backbone for a storyline. To say that the PC doesn't offer deep games that will immerse you in the role of another character is absolutely rubbish.

The only difference between the PC and Console storylines is that the PC often doesn't offer stylish and often cartoonish figureheads like Solid Snake, Jill Valentine, Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Pikachu. Instead it allows you to immerse yourself in a different way; by either offering you a selection of characters with no identifiable background, or by allowing you to make your own character. You can then make your own storyline based on the actions you take, which have either a positive or negative effect on how the game is played out.

There are still exceptions like with Gothic II, Myst III, Warcraft III and Spellforce II where you gradually learn of each character's past as you go through the game. Most of these games have multiple endings though. Except for Warcraft III, I think...

Of course, a storyline is more than just the character you play's background, and a simple ending. Unless you really do mean a storybook storyline when you talk about 'storylines', where there is only one ending, and how you play has no real effect on that ending. You play, you get the traditional guy meets girl character development, you read a bunch of meaningless text that advances the carbon copied plotline about saving the world, you beat the extremely easy game, you win, you get a happy ending...

If thats what you mean by 'storyline', then you should stick with the craptastic Final Fantasy series. It's all they've got these days.

I'd personally rather read a book.

So you trade 4 poor games in for 1 decent game. Then after you beat it, and get bored of it along with three other games... you trade that game, and those three other games in for another decent game?

No wonder Gamestop stopped selling PC games, console gamers'll make them vast ammounts of money with that scam.

I would assume that pirating and the spread of malware is one of the sole concerns of companies not offering rentals or trade-in deals on computer games.

I've only resold console games on E-bay, but only the rare ones like Earthbound and Valkyrie Profile... Both sold for over $100 US, which is pretty much twice the original price I paid for them. As for the rest? With the exception of nostalgia games, they're dust collectors or trash since you really can't trade in 8-bit, 16-bit, or PS1 games anymore.

                    ´

Take STALKER for example. An FPS with some RPG elements in it. It features a loosely based story driven main campaign with 7 endings. Those 7 endings you can aquire through either 3 steps or 1 main goal. 1 step, you kill this specific guy, that specific guy or both of them. 2nd step, you waste all your money. 3rd step, you dont do either. 1 goal- you try to reveal your identity by choosing 1-2 specific tasks. If THATS the kind of non-linearity you want, you are being hypocritical and heres why. In STALKER, those actions I just described to you (attempting to keep the spoilers to a bare minimum) can be done in a matter of minutes, and thus ruining the "le grande" RPG element in the story which is- anything you do in the game has an effect on the ending. The funny thing is that its fairly obvious that 6th and 7th endings are the "true" ones anyway. So youre left playing the game for that TRUE ending anyway. STALKER also features a very widely used console story driven game tactic to force you to play the game again to reveal all endings. But the funny thing is, as I already described, bar two, it can be done even if you save the game almost at the very end and simply backtrack. So much for that.

The PC niche as you call it... has always offered games with a strong backbone for a storyline. To say that the PC doesn't offer deep games that will immerse you in the role of another character is absolutely rubbish.
Almost none of the games on your list has become famous for its storyline. Even for FEAR it was mainly the AI. Even though some of those games are memorable for me personally exactly for their story.

The only difference between the PC and Console storylines is that the PC often doesn't offer stylish and often cartoonish figureheads like Solid Snake, Jill Valentine, Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Pikachu.
Segmentation. In those games the storyline revolves directly around the character, and since theres a lot of interaction between most characters in the game, the guys like Valentine and Snake get more popularity. In the same time its a hell of a lot easier to immerse and feel for the characters aswell. Which for example Oblivion for the most part didnt deliver.

Instead it allows you to immerse yourself in a different way; by either offering you a selection of characters with no identifiable background, or by allowing you to make your own character.
And whats the fun in that? You get a shallow character. Do you imagine it to be you? Character is a part of the story, and the games you just described (peculiarly mostly RPGs) thrive on you doing some stupid tasks for 99% of the time and actually seeing that "backbone" during that 1%. Which mostly takes place in the end and in the start of the game.

You can then make your own storyline based on the actions you take, which have either a positive or negative effect on how the game is played out.
Theres always a "true" or "false" storyline if the game has multiple endings. Some are there just to be here and to tease you, and only a few actually show how the game is supposed to end. Which is why for example Silent Hill and STALKER both have either "Good or bad" or "True and false" endings. In Silent Hills case the actualy journey to the ending takes place throughout the whole game, whereas in STALKER as I said, you can do it in a matter of a few clicks. (And I felt guilty and bad talking anything bad about STALKER as its an awesome game, especially once you reach the true endings)

There are still exceptions like with Gothic II, Myst III, Warcraft III and Spellforce II where you gradually learn of each character's past as you go through the game. Most of these games have multiple endings though. Except for Warcraft III, I think...
Correct, WC3 has one ending for each faction you play for, in a special order.

If thats what you mean by 'storyline', then you should stick with the craptastic Final Fantasy series. It's all they've got these days.

I suggest fishing. For those RPGs.

Youve probably never really had a game which left you unanswered questions and the need for discussion about certain topics. Ive been a fan of RE since its 3rd installment and since 2001 to 2006 Ive been a part of some great communities. During that time Ive endlessly discussed, created theories, patched plotholes in arguments, debates and topics I cant even count together. Its almost, if not more fun than the actual playing. Those are series and games one needs to play through, read through and discuss through to completely understand, as the story is just too big for one game. Which is why some games are legendary for their story, and your list... well... simply is not. Nerdy? Maybe. But Ive read sh!tload of books during my short life and I appreciate a good story.

That stuck out like a sore thumb for me. I guess your 100+ hours of enjoyment come from the time you spend on message boards with other console addicts, debating over Jill Valentine's actual breast size.

Now I can't help but question your sanity. *Crick?*

I guess we're just going to have to accept different paths for different people here ...well, at least until I get back from work today. Then I'll have some time to write a long-winded reply.

Actually no. If you're only going to pick out the insignificant points that you can attack like a politician, then I'm just going the same. I'm not above politics. Go Conservatives!

You should try the Myst series. It doesn't offer instant gratification like Resident Evil, but I guarantee you'll be perturbed for the rest of your life.

One reason that I may see the consoles get more popular over PC, is that you don't have to upgrade your console every 6 months just to play a new game.

Also, consoles are more 'sociable' in the sense that you can play with a friend at the same time, where you may only be sitting by yourself at your computer desk playing a PC game.

Just to counter that slightly though

The PC + internet allows you to still communicate with friends when it isn't possible for them to be with you in person

I know that consoles are getting in on this aswell, but still atm nothing in comparison to PC

I was mislead by all the media bad PR. but these last 3 months have had me on the edge of my seat getting intrested in gaming again. It so sweet the "drought" is over in the coming weeks.
Man, just quit being a PS3 Fanboy. There's sales figures that have been released that show Even with a lower price. The 360 made more launch money than a 360. When 360 launched, I remember it being all over the news. Don't remember anything with the PS3. The PS3 is a flop this time... They were too late. Microsoft is stealing their games and it's screwing them :) Hello GTA4 on 360 first this time!

Now that was retarded. Not really as retarded as videogame hentai though, but close. Thats the thing though, you probably havent dealt with a complex plot spanning through 5+ games. Youll either take it with a "meh" or youll become a fan.
