Why does VISTA cause BF2 problems?

Recently I got so fed up with the the lag and crashes that I dual booted my computer with XP. I loaded BF2 up on XP, rammed all the settings up to High, AA and AF were at 16x and there was absolutely no lag what so ever, as in none, not a flicker, zit... my Frame Rates were still breaking 100+ even on a 64 player server. INfact, when I loaded up Project Reality on the map Al Basrah (possibly the hardest map on resources), there was no lag at all.

Why then is Vista such an a*sehole to BF2?

hmm... a hard question to answer. Mainly because Aero is running in the background, eating resources. Turn that off, change to windows classic theme and see if it gets better. I'm running Vista with Aero and everything, but I haven't experienced yet a really devastating lag...

System specs? Updated drivers lately, or using the Vista default?

I'm running Vista 64 and BF2 plays as well or better than on XP.

Buy a clue. If you have Aero enabled and launch a game, Aero gets disabled. Also there have been enough tests done on enough sites that show the difference with Aero on or off is 1-2%, if there is any difference in game performance at all.

It's not Vista, it's the videocard drivers (for Vista) that are causing problems.

Is there any proof of that?

If you have a Nvidia card try using any of the early 100 series drivers and see how well the game doesn't play. Hell Nvidia is so proud of their early Vista drivers they don't even provide links to them anymore.

I am using the latest Vista drivers.

Ok, the performance for BF2 on Vista wasn't all that bad, it played smoothly with all the settings stepped up to high (AFAA included), but it did give me about 3 seconds of lag at the start of a map, then it ran smooth, XP gives me none. Additionally, mods such as EoD and PR did stutter on certain maps for no apparent reason. After switching to XP it has all gone. My main gripe was the fact that after 2 or 3 map loads the game would crash and give me some lame arse excuse about a Memory.dll. XP does not give me this error, even after ~40 map loads (left it on all night on a sort of busy server).

Some other person on VOIP was complaining about stuttering on XP with his nice watercooled system, sucks for him ;P

What do you mean by Vista default? Straight out of the packet, BF2 and Vista were not getting along (I didn't build the PC).

OK, what video card, and what version number for the drivers?

If the drivers are the 158.18 there are 3-4 driver sets that are newer than them, and almost everyone is getting better performance out of them regardless of what card or 32/64 bit Vista.
