Definition of Squad (via webster): a small organized group of military personnel; especially : a tactical unit that can be easily directed in the field
Definition of Leader: to direct the operations, activity, or performance of <lead an orchestra>
The squad leaders main objectives are to follow out orders that the commander give, to be a spawn point, to keep his squad living, well stocked with ammo, and to direct them to an objective and tell them to how, when, and where.
Following this simple idea can change how a game turns out, especially in public servers.
Squads are the most important part of the game, and leading one is not always easy.

Basics
If you hit the T button it will bring up a new commo rose, not one that looks like Q. Using this commo rose you can ask for UAV support, a supply crate, a vehicle, orders, and give orders.
The orders you can give are to: attack, defend, move, mine, and destroy.
The mine and destroy orders are not commonly given.
To issue the attack, defend, move, mine, and destroy orders you can do it 1 of 2 ways, bring up the map via caps lock, right click and select the spot where you want and select which command. The other way is with Q and the crosshairs.
Move is a very useful tool if you want to have your squad members to attack a point a certain way, like the back way or an alternative route.
UAV, supply crates, and vehicle drops can be given the same way.
UAV should always be requested for via caps lock. That way you can ask for it in the area that you are going into, not the area you are in. If there is another squad in your sector request it so you both will get UAV on your HUD.
Supply crates and vehicle drops should be requested cross hairs so you don't accidentally put it on a roof or tank or something where it will blow up. The only time you should use the map is if your squad is requesting it and you are far away, say if you are at dragon valley, your squad is going to cap the airfield. You die and spawn back at the carrier. Otherwise always use the cross hairs.

Tactics for the squad leader
A tactic that is almost guaranteed to work is using alternative routes, taking the scenic route, going through the woods rather than through the front door. I have taken over the Wake Island PLA airfield with a 4 man squad by using a route where I didn't get spotted.
Another great tactic is air insertion using a Blackhawk helo. Fly up as high as you can over the objective and have your guys jump out. Most jets don't fly at that altitude, they are more concerned with the bombing AA shooting them, and other helos don't fly up that high.
When you are advancing on foot you should always be in the middle, the most protected, why? Because you are the spawn point that is on the other side of the map, the spawn point that could make or break the round. Spawn point is, in my opinion, the 2nd most important aspect of squad leader position. If you are at the flag and your squad is taking heavy fire, get out of there, they will think they killed everyone and go away.
Then you can go back in and capture the flag. An example is when I was taking over the cement factory at Karkand. While my squad was trying to cap it I climbed the smokestack and parachuted down onto the building. My entire squad got killed, they spawned on the roof with me, waited for everyone to leave and then we capped the whole island.
A suggested kit is spec ops, mainly because of the medium range guns. This is just my opinion, I’ve tried it with other kits but spec ops seems to work the best because of the medium range scope. They don’t have much ammo but that’s why you have support in your squad.
