    Server Preferences

I run a small server and need feedback from the player community at large to help shed some light on something. With the massive amount of servers out there to play on what drives players to return to a particular server?

I always thank the players each game for visiting the server to play. As well as limiting a crazy amount of rules to turn folks off from returning. I have few admins and they are on the same page as how to handle situations. The map rotation is one air map, one ground map, one air map, etc. to have balance. And lastily, I ask players input on what they would like to see on the server (Armored Fury Night, Special Forces Night, etc).

With the above being said, what are the deciding factors when you decide to add a server to your favorites list? Does none of the factors matter because of the saturation of ranked servers limits the amount of players to play?

I appreciate the input and thank you for your time.

      Re: Server Preferences

      - Good map cycle

if you're running a small server (slotwise), don't bother with 64p maps. Just use 16p / some 32p maps, depending on slot amounts. What particular maps you want, is personal preference though.

      - Good server performance

way too many servers run at their max capacity, and then add even more slots.. server that runs well usually attracts better players as well.

      - Pretty much 0 rules

Kick/ban for intentional TK, that's about it. Even though I see the reasons why all sorts of rules are needed, people break them anyway (either by accident, by intention or because rules are so complicated that it's hard to follow them). After that, ppl spend more time typing than playing, and start to act like jackasses, which in my opinion, hurts the game more than what you gain with rules.

      - Active admins

I don't mean they should actually do stuff all the time, but be reachable, if server needs a boot, or map changed etc. Something like total team reshuffle every now and then if games get lopsided is something I'd like to see more of.

      - Friendly atmosphere

Discourage personal attacks, shell out admin statuses to well liked regulars, that you trust not to get angry, and have about zero ego. Also, discourage ANY sort of hack accusations on server.. If somebody really really wants to view his opinions on legitness of some player, give him a venue to get pb shots, and vent on irc/forums, but never on the server.

      - Populated

And this is obviously the hardest one, ppl just don't join half-full servers, unless they REALLY like the server. Try to gather group of friends/clanmates and whatnot and go fill the server regularly, switch to a well-liked map during that time. If a server is empty 90% of time, people tend to forget about it.

edit : about giving admin rights to "strangers", that can give you some extra traffic as well. Many ppl play with friends, and they'll surely choose a server where one has admin rights over others.

That's pretty much the server I'd frequent.

I like fair rules, for example no baserap with vehicle sonly on foot is VERY fair.
