You need to establish whether you have a sound card or onboard sound. If it's a sound card (i.e. a PCI card in a slot on the motherboard), then you need to make sure that onboard sound is DISABLED in the BIOS (assuming the motherboard has it).

If you don't have a sound card, and are infact using onboard, then you need to make sure it's ENABLED in the BIOS.

You can't have a sound card installed AND have onboard ENABLED at the same time.

Also, check in Device Manager (right click My Computer, choose Manage) and see if you have an unidentified devices or improperly installed ones. Double click on them and select Details. Look for "Device Instance ID" or "Hardware ID". This is the unique ID which represents that hardware - it'll look like "PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_20021102&REV_04" .

That's called a PnP (or PCI) ID. Broken down, VEN_1102 is Creative Labs. DEV_0004 is Audigy 2 ZS. That means I have a Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS! You don't really need the SUSBSYS/REV bits.

So, as poster #8 says, look up your PCI ID on the web, then you'll know what you've got, and you can download the drivers. Try http://www.pcidatabase.com/ and search on the vendor ID. It's easy.

hmm might be getting somewhere here, ill try that site in a second, but first, i went into device manager, and in "? other devices" i have a "PCI Device"
so i double clicked, went to details, and the device instance ID is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2668&SUBSYS_26688086&REV_03\

it continues a little after that, does that help at all?

aaaaaaaw i was so close there, i pasted that ID into google, and discovered its a Realtek High Definition Audio thing, so i googled that, went on this site:

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/REALTEK/

and downloaded the top one (im using xp)

and it worked, and prompted me to restart, but after the restart, no sound

Actually you can, and in most cases they co-exist quite happily together. As far as that goes I can show you links where someone has made a program for running an X-Fi and an X-Meridian (Creative and Auzentech) together by feeding the output from the X-fi into the X-Meridian.

I was trying to keep things simple, so as not to confuse the original poster, so that we can resolve his issue without complicating matters.

I was not seeking to be educated on something I make a living out of.

ok i tried those drivers again, and they didn't work, twice, but then out of nowhere it worked after one more try, and this time i chose to "restart my pc later" and was happily listening to the sound on my pc for about an hour and decided to reboot then before bed, and after the reboot, it wasn't working again :S

anyone got any ideas?

Did you take your computer apart at all. For some reason with XP you can't just shove a major piece of hardware in because XP 'rejects' it which means you have to reinstall windows after the hardware is fitted. If you didn't add anything, check your drivers, and download the right ones for your card from the website. Alternatively use the drivers you get with the sound card, which should be on a CD in the box the card came in

Or do you use a sound device with the card. 'Soundmax' etc. Check that you have something like that installed. May not be anything to do with the device but when my sound didnt work, i installed soundmax (i think thats what its called) and it worked fine.

hmm i see what you mean, but i have never so much as opened this pc, it's just like it was when i bought it. As i say, sometimes just trying to install the drivers works, but when it does, it stops after i reboot, maybe my pc is just not saving settings or something?

im wondering if this could be related to my internet crashing after about 10 minutes of use, whereby im using firefox and it stops responding, and i cant exit it and have to reboot again.

Have you downloaded and installed Teamspeak recently? I had the same problem as you just after I downloaded it...no sound device was showing up in Control Panel. I uninstalled Teamspeak and the sound came back as if nothing had happened. I have NO idea why it was happening, but I know that T/S gave some sort of error message whenever it was run...:)

nope sorry, i havent installed teamspeak.

however, yesterday the sound came back and was working the whole today, but yet again once i rebooted it was gone

EDIT :

i've stumbled across something just now, and it's that in device manager, the drivers i downloaded was a package, the main one is working, but the other 3 have yellow exclamation marks and a code 42

does that make things any clearer? :)
