    STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

nobody has made a thread on this yet, so i thought i would. I got the game yesterday and its a fantastic FPS/RPG. Just think of Oblivion 100,000 times better,

The lighting is the best I've ever seen in a game. Shadows are cast by absolutely everything - lightening strikes are beautifully across the sky (and a few seconds later, the deep rumble and crackle of thunder can be heard), rain falls in the direction of the wind, and gusts blow leaves and debris through the trees, moving the foliage in the appropriate direction.

Everything cast shadows - even the grass. Everything is bump-mapped, detailed and everything (that should be) is physics-enabled.

    The atmosphere created is astonishing.

Even better is the AI - especially that of the wildlife. Every creature and character behaves more or less how you'd expect it to in real life. Whilst I was underground, there were soldiers actively clearing the rooms I'd previously visited in order to flush me out. They all make use of cover and are quite capable of flanking their opponents. I've noticed that they also appear in different places and do different things after a death/reload, making it harder to guess where they'll be. Bodies and dropped items seem to be persistent even if you leave the area, so you can come back for more pillaging later on.

The weapons even behave more or less as you'd expect - they aren't overly powerful or accurate so as to make things easy, but the larger rifles still feel solid and brutal.

The game engine feels like a cross of the best elements of Far Cry (or Armed Assault) and Unreal 2.5 - gorgeous graphics, yet very solid and responsive.

    here is a few pics..

Sounds pretty sweet. Have you tried out multiplayer? How is it?

You can get the BETA Demo here.

I have not tried Multiplayer yet, the SP is the main thing.

Looks nice...are those shots full graphics settings? I might get this as BF2 is getting a bit sucky.

Same thing here...they said they would do a post launch demo for the game but I have yet to see it yet.

The game does look great though and I'm looking forward to playing it.

                  Re: STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

I was actually completely taken off guard a couple days when I heard this game was out. I had not checked on the game's status in a long time due to the perpetual delays it had experienced when it was in development.

So far it has gotten pretty positive reviews, which is greatly reassuring because games that become vaporware tend to lose their luster and they are no longer revolutionary-ish when they come out.

So far STALKER is actually living up to the very high expectations and hype that they created when the game was in development. I was really worried that the game would not live up to its ambitious game design plan in the similar way Soldner didn't.

Well that beta runs aside from the sky which is odd blurs. Only trouble with game is its not like oblivion no free roaming. System specs are rather high for the game :P

you can roam just as much as u can on oblivion, although some areas you cannot go unless you have enough protective gear to get into the areas as they have high radiation, but that does not stop you from free roaming.

The zones appear to be leftovers from the super-ambitious days. The unplayable areas look perfectly playable from just looking at the map, they probably just never polished and fully fleshed them out; for example the small city above the Yantar area.

                            Re: STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

I must add my praise to Tonics. I, after much himming and hawing, picked this up last friday and haven't been able to stop playing it since.

Enemies no longer charge blindly forward, the actively seek out cover and constantly try to outflank you. Considering how quiet they can be, I've been snuck up on quite a lot. And I've died. Oh how I've died.
This game has a difficult start, being limited to a pistol sawed off, double-barrel shotgun if you're lucky, (sub-machinegun if you're very lucky) and knife. But at no time does it feel unfair. The enemies can be beaten if you don't charge blindly forward and make effective use of cover in firefights. If you do die, you get a sense that you screwed up and you deserved to die.

Hopefully not giving anything away, but I'm at the point of having gotten past the X-18 lab. I've already run into the scientist (on a side-quest), which was, I must say, a very exciting encounter:

"Wolf, we've just spotted a STALKER. What should we do?"
"What do we do with any witnesses? Get rid of him, without any fuss."

Ah the joys of having a wide-band radio.

Weapons, particularly assault rifles, sound as they should. Throw in different ammunition, and the ability to add a scope and grenade launcher and you're laughing.
The sheer wealth of weapons on offer is fantastic.

Having travelled about a lot every time I go into a new area, or even revisit old favourites, I don't know what to expect.

Which isn't as much a problem as I thought it would be. Considering how large The Cordon, alone, is, unless they implemented vehicles of some sort it would be very tedious trudging back and forth.

might want to either complete the game before trying to play online, or wait for the patches to fix everything,

                              S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl Patch
This is the first patch released for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl fixing a list of 68 items. This patch will erase your saved games!
                              lol
