I totally agree with you. When i play sniper, sometimes I just sit on a spot and rack up kills because im bored and sometimes I play offensive sniping. Theres different ways to play sniper but theres none real or false way to snipe, everyone has his style. And thats what makes the game interesting. :)
Same for me. When I started out in Vanilla on this account I did full rotations and used every kit in the arsenal.
When SF came around I played somewhat more with the Sniper Kit. Especially on the Night maps it would really own. I still think back with fond memories of Devil's Perch and Night Flight. Maxed out 32/64 servers for awesome battles. Together with Ghost Town it was probably the best time in the game I had.
Without me noticing I had achieved a 5:1 KDR already on the Sniper Rifle with and accuracy of 49% ( 5:1 ).
I did a lot of close up support stuff in those days, the Designated Marksman -style if you like. Lots of kills and lots of stress :) But enjoyable nonetheless with some server regulars.

Overtime SF died out (txs to the absence of support by EA) somewhat and people moved back, via EuroForces , to Vanilla. This must also have been the time where people whored up Karkand like there was no tomorrow. Medic galore and not tactics whatsoever. Not my cookie. So I wandered of that map and started taking in the lesser played maps on my list. I am not going to name them all but the 3D's (Dragon Valley, Dalian Plant, Daqing Oilfields) are solid maps to play on imo.

The TV2-servers have lots of 24/7 single map servers which were always maxed out with people in 2006. I played most maps, but Dragon Valley stood out as an awesome sniper map for my style by then.
I had moved out of the city and the confined maps of SF and adopted a more laid back playing style. Like most of you I already have enough stress on the day-job and I dont need to extend it to my evenings as well. And D.V. is an excellent map for the more relaxed Scout Sniper -style. Overtime I got a pretty good feeling for the tempo played on this map and it allowed me to keep on increasing my relevant stats on the Sniper Rifle & Kit. Something which by that time was becoming the only challenge left for me in the game (and still is I might add). Flanking troops on the high ridges or from tactical positions to support them in capping flags or defending if the situation calls for it. Dragon Valley is Sniper heaven imho :)

As flippy199 & True-WarMachine already posted there is no definitive way of stating what makes a good Sniper.
It depends largely on your personal playing style and the goals you have for that session/account.
When I look at my own account these days I know I can take it further than where it is at know. My average over time has become 50:1 for the Rifle and as of late 60% for the Accuracy. I think when I go 20:1 and 58% the game will be dead and replaced with something else. Those are my overall goals besides having a lot of fun with friends & server regulars on TV2 servers :)

My own list of good snipers (based on personal experience):

    ChikyuuShoujoArujuna - #4 Sniper in the World & Best Designated Marksman (he is like a tornado on City maps and in a league of his own);
    dont_be_ss - #9 Sniper in the World & Best Scout Sniper (LRSW if you like, he holds the long distance record with a kill over 610 meters on Dalian Plant);
Books_DCDF - #17 Sniper in the World & Best Allround Sniper (most steady Sniper who has been in the Top-20 for as long as I can remember).

From my own country they would have to be:

gjors65 - #59 Sniper in the world & a good Long Range Sniper
    cohen1976 - very nice 5:1 KDR & 63.69% Accuracy.

Hey Jemme101 I heard a lot of people saying there best long distance kill, is there a site (or any way) where i can get mine??
TV2 eh?? Ill try to find you on Dragon Valley, if your ok with it. :) I personally think that to become a better sniper I have to play with/against good ones.

I still say that I'm in his league, if not as good as he is as a Designated Marksman.

I'm pretty good at long ranged shots now as well, although I prefer to capture a flag, than camp at one.

          Re: Sniper Stats

Hmm not quite sure what you mean by site where you can get them. If you are asking if it is a Stat that can be found somewhere, the answer is no.

The way to measure a long range kill is simple. Go SquadLeader; set the Move To (yellow) marker on your target (or kill afterwards) and press the Alt key. By doing so you can get an exact readout on the distance.
If you want to go for a record the best way to get it acknowledged is by recording it with Fraps or something. Its all personal imo and with my current computer I wont be able to make the shots anyways :)

The best map to break the record on is Dalian Plant, because of the View/Fog distance ...

You are always welcome to join me on a server, but Dragon Valley has a steep learning curve when it comes to Sniping. So dont let that intimidate you when you hook up with or against me :)

A better way to get some experience at an higher pace would be to hook up with the WOoKie's. Chillin&Killin and dont_be_ss are the leaders of that sniper outfit and they usually hang out on Wake servers which are easier in terms of sniping because of the focused fronts you get on that map.

You can also use My Leaderboard to see who is on :)

Well you could try to play with/against him. He is back from a 2 month break since last week. But for the moment I will stick with him as being my personal favorite CQB sniper. He is even better than Nyte who was long considered to be the best.
When I can I will drop by and see how you play Dairuka. Probably in a support role since my ping will be above average :)

LOL i suck at sniping but i still pull off a few screamable headshots.

I have a low accuracy because i just shoot random things. I really gotta stop doing that...

^^^ Try something else besides Karkand. Work on getting your K/D over 1 and improving your accuracy. Perhaps hang back from the main battle and find less exposed spots to snipe from.

                      Re: Sniper Stats

People don't fly as sniper... because that would give them an inflated K/D ratio with that kit.

Accuracy and Sniper Rifle K/D ratio only provide a small glimpse into a player's skill.

To me a good sniper is point, shoot, hit, not die....that is a good sniper.

But that is very different then real life "good sniper".

                            Re: Sniper Stats

Just started, but I'm pretty hooked onto sniping

My stats are (this is with the sniper rifle):

                            Kills: 122
                            Deaths: 33
                            Ratio: 3.6970
                            Accuracy: 50.45%
                            Sniper Rifle Time Used: 1:45:30

                            Link to my sats: http://bf2s.com/player/95474368/

I usually use the M24 to get a higher accuracy percentage, but if it weren't for that I would use the SVD.

Well Id consider you a avg one not the best but not the worst either for me I am not "good" with a sniper but I have my days were I use it and I am killing left and right with the gun not the claymore.
