    Definition of a hack

Having looked at reports for the last year and admining servers the one thing that stands out to me is the constant accusation of someone hacking.

In game you always see "nice hack", "so & so is hacking" and others so I thought I would get the communities input into what they feel is a hack.

We all know about cheats but it seems that there is always someone that is getting pwned screaming hack when for whatever reason they feel they should have gotten the best of the other player.

Just thought I would throw this out to the players so we all can get a better understanding of the definition of a hack.

    Thx Dacster

You should probably ask Evenbalance, but I think hack is something what you can't do by hand without tools, and it changes or adds something into the game either in memory or during loading (replacing files). Everything below that is not hacking, but cheating maybe.

Cvars are not hacking unless they're enabled with a hack or modification?

Take a look at league's rules to see what they think is not legal. ESL for example has penalty points if you use colored models (in CS?) and so on. It's not hacking but they don't allow using those.

Just to clear it: Hacking and cheating are completely different things. Hacking in games may not always mean cheating.

Don't know if its what you mean mate but the way I see it, a hack is a piece of software used to give an unfair advantage (aimbot etc).
Someone showing a mate how to get inside of a building isn't a hack IMO, thats glitching, ie, using a fault inherent in BF2 to gain advantage.
Most of the time, the only way to positively find a hacker is by using the likes of PunkBuster to find it, glitchers can be found by anyone with open eyes. Obviously this isn't always the case, some players using aimbots are just SSOOOOOOOO obvious about it (Rapid killing SVD anyone?). :)

            Edit:
Strike, thats one outstanding "rig" you got there mate lol

A "hack" would be something like intercepting the connection to the stat servers to give you 400000000000000 points per kill. A "cheat", or what most pussified whiners call a "hack" would be something that hooks bf2 to provide enhanced gameplay features.

                Re: Definition of a hack

Exploits are items in the game that the developer missed out in the gaming code much like Dice.

Cheats codes have been around in mp games for ages which able a person to rack up points fast ways for example aimbot or sometime a person can see through solid buildings

A hack is a code that is written to help a player improve his weapon, more life so if he get shot he quickly heals. In others words he will have to probably write it out or put it in a certain file. That is my understanding of a hack. PB list them sometimes as MultiHack which is a Windows based application, I think?

Most server runs PB (punk buster) that has information of known gaming cheat codes this however still get the geeks in the world to create more and PB boys and girls have to create a code to combat it.

However both are hard to prove if a person is a cheat on BF2 (I think) but looking at those who do try and get away with cheating in BF2 so far 4325 have been caught via PB and now the game will not work at all (what a shame) no matter how many time they changed his or her names it will still not let the person in even so if he/she took the cheat code away it is buried deep in the computer.

Take a look at what I mean.

I hope that has give you some help and if I am wrong I am happy myself to learn

                  Re: Definition of a hack

In the case of online gaming, a 'hacker' is a player who utilizes a cheating program to gain an advantage in-game over others - including wallhacks, aimbot, etc.

Real 'hackers' are guys who can exploit weaknesses in operating systems, software, etc and can write/create the programs to take advantage of said weaknesses.

Some punk paying for/downloading a cheat program for BF2, is not really a 'hacker', but it is a widely accepted use of the word because he is employing 'hacks'.

I've used "You are a hack" in game accusing them of cheating, and I've also used "You are a hack" as defining 'one who is banal, devoid of talent'.

I know the difference between a cheater and a hacker, but in online gaming, calling them a 'hacker' is still probably more accurate than simply calling them a 'cheater', since they are employing 'hacks'

yer, just what ent|ty said.. there are also ways to alter your own game config files to add enhancements:eg, altering reload times, limiting recoil, extending sprint time etc.. but it must be done in such a way that PB will miss it on a sweep so you need code which will either direct PB to a clean config or a program that blocks PB screenshots.
I was an admin on a Call of Duty:United Offensive server for a year and we were constantly catching cheats and banning them. There was even a web site called 'The All Seeing Cow' that monitored caught cheats and you could submit evidence for a panel to decide if the player was guilty of cheating or not. A database existed where you could view these low life scum. Pity BF2 didnt have something similar. Even if they added a kill cam that showed the last 5 seconds before you died from the vantage point of the one killing you, then that would discourage a lot of cheats.
By the way, I despise cheats and think they are lower than whale krap and I have never cheated in the game. Check out my stats, they're pretty average.

                        Re: Definition of a hack

To me, hacking is using illegal 3rd-party programs/add-ons/macros/applications that changes the nature or content of the game to that person only. It's something a player could not achieve unless he or she obtains it from an outside source beyond BF2, unlike exploiting glitches and wall clipping which everyone can do.

Hacking is cheating, but cheating does not necessarily mean it's hacking.

Hacks like you mentioned are often called trainers and used in single-player games. In multiplayer games even hacks can't change health or weapon specs, because they're on server side, no matter what client thinks. If he's dead on server, hes dead for everyone but maybe himself.

How can someone be caught three times by PsB if one time will prevent you from entering PsB server? Anyway, that's a perfect example of a non-hack. Reddot is not considered a cheat by Punkbuster, however, some admins consider it as cheating and thus PsB bans people caught with it. It's also the most common reason to get banned by PsB. Reddot is and overlay, which does not interfere with the game in any way.

Exactly, but hacking does not necessarily mean it cheating , if it's not done to get unfair advantage. Like ****'s and so on.

                            Good thread!

I agree, there are way too many people accusing each other, most of the time it's new players who don't have the feel for the game (admins for example ).
